Post #5 : On Social Support
In our lives we surround ourselves with a knit of people who are our social support. Our family, friends, and individuals we trust. From the book Self-Nurture, this part on social support was intriguing to think about:
Problems arise when we expect a sibling to react and behave the way we do, which is usually based on the mistaken assumption that since we came from the same family, our values and way of thinking will be the same. (225).
If I were to rephrase this it would be "Problems occur when we expect a person to react or behave in a certain way." We shouldn't have assumptions and expectations on others weather they are our family members, our peers, or friends as well. Assumptions and judging a person isn't how we should approach the way of thinking of another person. We're individuals.
This is where a problem can occur. I've had people close to me in my life who had admit such things as one of my friend's has said: It's hard to always be funny, just because you like to be funny. People just assume you're always going to bring some sort of humor with you, but that get's tiring.
We're only human and we're bond to make mistakes. Having too many expectations that aren't realistic can lead to problems and assuming a person is a certain way isn't a healthy bond. We have to learn from our mistakes, accept all of our flaws and forgive-we must forgive ourselves and each other.
