Eridan is a major & needy asshole but like. Behind that exterior is a scared, lonely kid who genuinely believes that literally nobody gives a fuck about him beyond his usefulness. The huss claims that Homestuck is a comedy but it is a tragedy at almost every joint and you can see it from how Eridan's descent was entirely preventable from outside but nobody (even Karkat!) actually bothered to pay attention to him and try to understand that he needed a friend. Also the fourth person who gets him is phemiec lmao
It is a tragedy and honestly as you said if Eridan actually got some support and help he might not have been as horrible as he was
esp considering his and fef's relationship was ONE SIDED where fef was SUPPOSED to suppress and calm down Eridan's need to kill instead fueled and instigated it by making him kill for HER lusii because she was a pacifist and refused to kill so she made him do it.
and then turn around and say he was exhausting to have as a partner because he was needy and emotional or whatever and to be fair that's valid to say and believe but its bullshit that she didnt really do her job as a partner in helping him and just made it about HER and SHE was the one suffering
eridan had like no real friends except karkat and even then karkat was busy with so much other shit
like yk i just remembered too when karkat iirc was grieving?upset over sollux's 'death' and eridan was trying to message him before being told like oh karkats busy like. being upset over sollux eridan was like "oh SHIT dude im so sorry i feel and seem like such an asshole now i didnt know im sorry"
or some shit like that i forgot what it was about but karkat was upset/grieving over something and eridan was like oh my bad dude im sorry
like he had potential to be a better person as he was also someone again suffering under alternian standards and propaganda, which people use to excuse vriska's actions up until her death, and if eridan got the proper help and shit he would've turned into a better person but hussie just. kinda sucks LOL

I haven’t really looked into the AU sphere as of late, though i will say I enjoy writing Non-sburb aus where Humans and Trolls live in the same universe. (With all the sci-fi tropes it implies)
