Firebombing was obviously out of the question. A few rounds of anti plant rockets and the landing site was cleared.

Vines were ripped aside. And there was an immediate complication.

A massive, 20 meter tall stone I with an birds head carves in the center. The lightning bolts had all broken off with time.

“Holy throne” he murmered quietly. He’d never actually seen anything beyond a drawing of the symbol in childhood textbooks.

“Get an astropath. This is outside our realm. We need to contact Terra.”

The voxman nodded. “This belongs to the Inquisition?”

“No Mikalos, this belongs even further up the food chain I think. Get a pict crew. Record everything. Our documentation is going to need to be impeccable. Tell everyone to stop what they’re doing. Keep setting up a base camp we’re going to be waiting a while.”

The vox man looked confused. “Sir?”

“Mikalos. That’s a damaged symbol of the Adeptus Custodes. Past the fringe of the Imperium. On a dead city that’s been covered by jungle for 5 centuries at least. It’s above my paygrade.”

The vox operator blanched and then began relaying orders, periodically looking at the monument with a reverent stare.

Emperor willing, and why wouldn’t He be in this circumstance, it would be only a year before someone arrived.

Karna had only just finished delivering the final blow to the last of the Heretic Astartes as the silence settled. The mountain air was filled with the rolling thunder of Imperial guns that sat only a short distance away, their constant thundering was a reminder of just how active this battlefield was. The Iron-Hawks however found themselves further and further away from the battle lines, leading the tip of the spear that was thrust to the heretics. They had plunged deep into enemy territory until they finally seized another fortification. This time it was a watch station of no small size. A complex that spanned half the mountain range. He drew in the sight of their victory and turned his attention to the guardsmen that accompanied his host.

“You did well, mortals. Ensure we do not lose this place.“ He tells them as he steps through the great gates. It is there that he sees a figure he had not seen before. At least not here.

He could not deny that she held a presence about her that demanded his attention, but the Shield-Captain was not often lost in thought. He reached for his helm and removed it, exposing his face to the cool, mountain air. His hardened eyes looked at her without the distortion of sensors and color filled his eyes. She was adorned in finely crafted and attuned armor that could be considered a work of art even among the already skilled artisans. It reminded him of the better ages that were long since lost on other custodians and his own thoughts drifted again. That was until he took notice that she was staring at him. Karna couldn’t help but laugh at the turn of the moment and had he not been encumbered by the Allarus suit then he would have rubbed the back of his head.

Regardless, he stepped forward as he realized what state he was in. His cloak was tattered and torn from the months of combat. His auramite was marked with the war-scars that came with constant fighting and his armor was a faded gold from the amount of blood that was caked onto him. If anything, he looked as though he had waded out of a red ocean. Though such as it was, this was to be expected of him and his shield-host. Where others would seek to polish their armor and appear their finest, these custodians shared the mindset of appearing as if they waded from war. Always the Iron Hawks focused on the most intense of battles, breaking long and horrible sieges and here was their Shield-Captain.

“What brings you here to the front?“ He asked as he stopped only a few meters away, his scarred face offering a smile. He was almost embarrassed. Almost. “I’ve heard of you, the wings I mean, but we never got the chance to meet. I am Karna Aleksandros of the Iron Hawks, you are…?“

Branwen blushes.

“I admit, it took me some time to consider your gift. A mere weapon or piece of armor seemed laughable in comparison to the most humble armory of the Custodes - and I wanted something for my Radiant Eagle to be more meaningful...”

Branwen presents a black cloak consisting of a triple-layered fabric. The outermost is made of a diaphanous material, casting a smoky screen over the embroidered velvet of the second. Silver stitching on this layer lays out an intricate mural - birds in flight amidst a backdrop of a moon and stars. The innermost layer consists of shimmering silk, soft to the touch. Along the cloak’s collar and across it’s shoulders is a plumed layer of raven feathers.

“It took a few expeditions into the forests of Kiavahr to collect those feathers,” Branwen chuckles. “But... I do hope you like it, my love.”
