Heyyy just saw your explanation why Alec's arranged marriage is bad, and I'm kinda confused. When did this become a thing?? And who is Lydia??
Hey there, bro, I got you.
Hereās a general Spoiler page about all the charactersā representations within Shadowhunters. Warning, super mega spoilers. Ā [Link here]
Hereās a post about the marriage specifically, same blog, same warnings apply. [link here]
Hereās my explanation post in general on why itās bad for anyone seeing this who wants to know what askraphael is referring to [link here]
Again. I have three central problems with Alecās arranged marriage arc. (Yes, thereās a scant possibility this will be cut by showtime, but it was written in where a fan could find it, itās not good).
One is that this sort of plotline is homophobic. At its base, it takes drama by forcing a gay person into a hetero marriage that he does not want, and relies on an erasure of his sexuality and a stripping of his agency to create drama. It happens somewhat frequently as aĀ ācorrectionā storyline in media and it is gross and terrible. This has no basis in the world or characters or canon of TMI and is something the writers of the show thought was okay to do.
Secondly is that Maryse Lightwood, for that matter, would never do that. She never even suggests marrying off one of her children, regardless of sexuality. She does not strip them of that kind of agency. Ā And the spoilers mention herĀ ādisapprovingā of Alecās sexuality in the show, so they have turned her into a homophobe who would rather take away her sonās choices than have him be gay, despite Alec himself saying in the books that his mother accepts his sexuality.
Thirdly is that even if they change it so that Maryse doesnāt know Alec is gay when she arranges a marriage by the time the show airs, Alec coming out would become less and less about him deciding he is confident in himself and his love for his boyfriend and doesnāt care about what others think anymore. It becomes necessary for him to literally keep out of being forced into a marriage with someone he can never love, and having his choices stripped away from him, and thatās a really, really gross change! Ā
Iād already decided I didnāt want to watch the show, but as itās an adaptation of my main fandom, and this is just a disgusting decision to make for any writer, I just canāt stay quiet.
