he managed to track down the library here in middlesbrough, the selection was quite restricted but he managed to find a few volumes he might e n j o y.   it was upon exiting the building one day a stack of books in hand when he collided with the stranger.   ❛  i’m so sorry, that was my fault. i’m rather clumsy aren’t i  ❜  he babbled reaching for his books, not once gazing up at the person he bummed into.

Prior to her confession, Lacey had planned to attend her first mass for weeks. Despite her hangups and discomfort, she wanted to do better and attend when she should, and perhaps Father MacAvoy’s playful jabs had given her a little bit of a push. That had been before the smack that reality and righteousness had delivered across her cheek.

Where did she get off thinking she could get anywhere with a priest?

She didn’t ask any questions as he took her by the hand, though she did wonder what he was up to as he led her away. Unless something was wrong, she couldn’t imagine why he’d be taking her to somewhere private. Surely he wouldn’t give into temptation here. That was the only other reason he could be leading her away, but he wouldn’t. Joseph wouldn’t.

He took her completely by surprise when he pushed her against the wall. At the apology that fell from his lips, her eyebrows twitched into a slight furrow; she wasn’t sure what he was on about, but didn’t have much time to ponder it further. 

There was but a moment’s hesitation from Belle, before she pressed her lips back against his. Her arms slipped around his shoulders, pulling him closer. There was a burst of excited warmth in her belly as they kissed, knowing he had instigated this. Dragged her down the deserted hallway (or so she hoped) and pushed her against the wall and kissed her, like a man making his claim. It was certainly a change from his usual sweet, meekness, but one she was quite enjoying.

She hummed as she put on the last earring, finishing in her preparation. The better part of the afternoon had been spent wondering how the evening would go, rendering Belle utterly useless. Since Joseph had told her he would bring dinner, she had been excited, very much looking forward to seeing him again. Even if there was still that same old awkward quiet that fell between them, when Joseph seemed to grow uncomfortable with what they were doing and Belle found herself wondering what she was doing wrong.

It wasn’t perfect, but she liked spending time with him.

It was the toll of the church bells that suddenly had Belle gnawing on her fingernail. Up to this point she’d swung between burning anger, desperate yearning and the lowest she’d ever felt; now, it was a large lump of dread.
