Jen is so short but her height is enough to contain all her unstoppable rage
This sounds like something Luke would say about her haha

AU where Samuel and Jen are alive and get to be with their friends and family... that's the dream baby. Still gotta feel bad for Smiths getting the short end of the stick even in the AUs though.
This AU is so pure and I need more happiness for these characters in my life.As for Smits (I assume that’s who you’re talking about??) I’ve actually never felt like he really got the bad end of the stick, even in canon. One interesting thing I’ve seen in the SC series is the theme of not only moving past a loved one’s death, but learning from it and even channeling their hopes and dreams to honor them. This theme is most apparent in Among the Enemy, but it’s also seen every time Luke thinks about Jen, every time her parents talk about her, every time her name is even mentioned post-death.The concept of honoring loved ones beyond death is one of my favorite themes in the Shadow Children series, and honestly, Smits learned a lot more from Lee’s death than he ever learned from his life. And I don’t think his life with Luke and the Garners is going to make him miss his life with his parents much, despite of course mourning their death.I love these AUs to bits and will cling onto them for the rest of my years, but I’ll always remember a boy named Luke who let a little kid named Smits pull him in a rusty old farm wagon just to help him feel happy again.
I find the fact that everybody in the fandom so far seems to be aspec to be kind of amazing and hilarious.
;)Maybe because books aimed towards a younger audience tend to have less content that might be uncomfortable for an Aspec person to read? I know that’s one reason I don’t enjoy reading YA books haha.I don’t think all of us are Aspec but most seem to be and that’s pretty cool.
I like the solidarity seemingly the whole fandom has in regards to Jen not being dead in most discussions. It's just a unonimous "nah" in regards to canon and that's endearing.
Haha AGREED ThOuGH it’s GREAT.Although personally, when thinking of the series my brain goes straight to her canonical death, so fair bit of warning, sometimes my brain doesn’t translate straight into AU oof. Meaning most of my ideas for now will probably be canonical.
it seems like u got yourself into Luke/Jen shipping hell. welcome to the world of either insane angst or AUs to Pluto and back 👀
I think I’ve been in on the Luke/Jen ship since I first read the books as a kid, now it’s just ten times worse because I actually know what shipping is and have some concept of relationships.I wanna draw them sooo bad but I’m in art block and have no ideas for situations or poses or anything. If you guys have prompts or anything feel free to share.
Also: Juke, Luen? Something else? For the shipname. ;)

how do you feel about the idea of lgbt+ headcanons in the series (or any other of haddix's works) and do you headcanon anything for them?
Headcanon anything you want, of course! The neat thing about fiction and books in general is that the reader gets to fill in the blank and interpret things however they see fit.
The characters are mostly young though, and the series isn’t romance heavy, so it’s going on limited info, though.
From what I’ve considered:
Jen: I can see her as either pan/bi or straight.
Luke: he actually strikes me as either demisexual or somewhere along gray-ace. (Haha maybe because I’m aspec and I relate to him) Other than that, maybe straight or bi.
Trey: ?? I feel like bi or straight could both fit him pretty well.
Nina: considering how she acted around guys vs how she acted around girls, she seemed pretty heterosexual to me. She tended to act upfront and kind of “normal” around girls, but with guys she had a tendency to either major flirt or act overly snappish.
(There were several Christian undertones hinted in the series, so I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the older characters if not all were written as straight, but that doesn’t have to stop you from making headcanons or AUs.)
A lot of the other characters like Matthias, Percy, Smitz, etc. are too young for me to really tell, they could honestly be anything.
Shadow Children fandom vehemently ignore Jen's death challenge.
This challenge … isn’t very hard, now is it?
What type of stuffed animal do you think each of the kids would have if they were to get one? Because like you said, we need more fluff.
Oooh yess
Luke: a horse?Jen: probably like a huge black dog (or wolf!), I honestly feel like she was this edgy tomboy growing upTrey: An owl? Or a teddy bearNina: I feel like she’d be the type to have a stuffed doll, but if not, maybe a doggoMatthias: a stuffed cat, just to shake things upPercy: a stuffed robot, what else?Alia: probably a unicorn :’D because she’s precious
