Oh that is so great to hear. I'm so glad you are writing!
I only have 500 words and some notes on notes on notes of the boring exposition and explanation as to why this bad is happening. I absolutely love building those parts almost as much as I love adding the boys to the very bad situations.
I feel like someone needs to be impaled.
And and and a scene is needed where they find each other again (yeah boring exposition as to why they keep getting captured and separated again is included)-- where one is secured to a tree, freezing and barely conscious, and the other finally spots him and runs toward him to free him yelling his name to see if he can get a response. And that is the point where they learn not to call out to each other when they're separated because the poor fella stuck to the tree lifts his head only to watch his man get (insert fun injury here!) as he watches helplessly. Not sure which i want where yet, depends on the other injures planned, honestly.
But no, I am not actually writing a story. I'm just enjoying thinking about one. It's the most creativity my brain has seen in years. I can not wait to see yours.
🦋
BUTTERFLIES! I love all of this.
Also absolutely feral for "one of them is restrained and has to endure witnessing the other experience Terrible Misfortunes" 🥰🥰🥰
Unfortunately, i am currently at the stage of writing where the laptop next to me is very shut, but my brain is full of little whirlwinds that haven't worked their way into the story yet:
- shot with arrows! Because the St Sebastian aesthetic is eternal, and because there's a lot of creative liberty around how deep the penetrating (heh) injuries go.
- one of them slumped over the back of some kind of escape vehicle, too weak to hold on, so he's secured to it like spare equipment
- some of this taking place when they are SO CLOSE to home/safety/medical support, but the very small distance being nearly insurmountable on account of The Injuries
- some good old clutching each other close for body heat (and this maybe being how one of the hidden injuries is discovered because where did that red come from...)
Thank you, as always.
Unrelatedly, I am assuming you have seen the clenched/twitching jaw moments of Lance speed-running his torture recollections? Sweet, doomed bambi.

Maybe while Shane is checking on Ilya, he gets a dart in the ass. Ilya wakes to find blood in his eye and his husband out cold and drugged to the gills.
The hunters are glad to have elite athletes to pursue, but having them cornered there is too easy. That's just their head start. We've got concussion Russian and tranqu'd up shane thinking they're about to leave, but all of the tires are flattened on their vehicle, there's zero communication capabilities, the snowmobile or whatever has sand in the gas tank, they can only try to escape/outrun on foot with their injuries. man oh man(gender neutral) the plot bunnies are froclicking 🦋
BUTTERFLIES! Yesssssss they are glorious words indeed (also tranq-d Shane is gonna be a delight in ALL scenarios)
Like, I think the FIRST time they let Ilya go, they're gonna be surprised at how fast he is (working on the assumption that they're the only 3 people in all of Canada who don't follow hockey and think he's just a tourist). Which means they're gonna have to get more creative about slowing them down the second time.
Also also also: before all this starts, when everything is still cosy and hopeful (and not overtaken by primal terror) Shane makes some joke about being wrapped up under the Christmas tree as a gift to Ilya. And then later, they're gonna be in a forest, so....
I haven't slept well in weeks, but you gave me a beautiful piece to chew on, and I slept like a dad.
Shane and Ilya, after some weird public backlash over something made up/completely untrue problematic b.s, decided to spend their short Christmas break off grid for some winter cabin time-cold hikes followed by cozy snuggles.
He'd heard of tales of groups up there hunting people for sport, but had always been told those were just made up to keep American tourists away because they were such a drain on resources always needing rescue when they got lost or too cold.
Ilya had gone out to grab firewood from the shed at the rental cabin after some foreplay talk about hot log splitting guys on the internet. When he hadn't come back in a reasonable amount of time, those silly hunting stories starting nagging at Shane's brain.
He just needed to step out and lay eyes on his man, then he could shove that silly little fear back into the box of bullshit and bury it again. What a ridiculous thought. Why was he even entertaining it?
Ilya had chosen the driest logs with the longest grooves to take back and split with his hands Captain America style. It would be humiliating to fail at this task as cocky as he was about his physical prowess. Then Shane's giant hands would rip them right in half. Maybe ilya should start with the axe just in case. There was a very clear spot on the wall where the axe should have been, but it was empty. He turned his attention to the noise behind him, ready to make up some excuse to his husband about why it was taking him so long to get the logs, but was met with an axe butt to the temple.
🦋
BUTTERFLIES!
An axe. I love it. Especially the part where the plans to do hot lumberjacking get interrupted by BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA oh my god.
Anyway, I've now got the laptop out and am tap tapping away between chores and obligations 💛🦋
I have been repeatedly watching the gif of Lance Kingston screaming, and it got me thinking: you know, Ilya didn't really get an opportunity to scream in Staring at the Sun. But he is of course very stoic, so he wouldn't. UNLESS... What do you think it would take to get Ilya to scream?
Signed,
A Sicko
Beloved sicko,
I have not only been watching the same loop (the SOUNDS! the ANGUISH!) but also have been having the very same thoughts about what it would take. Because it has to happen.
I mean. There was a very valid reason for him not being able to scream in SatS. I think he tried. But.
I think there are 2 main components needed to make this happen, and I'm gonna ramble so here comes the cut:
So, assuming we're keeping it in-universe!
1: Fear
As you say, he's stoic. He's Slavic, and depressed. The issue with Ilya and fear is that he would be in fervent denial (to others and himself) about ever experiencing it. Thus, the fast cars. The play styles that have him canonically baiting Scott Hunter into sucker-punching him, for fun. Fear belongs to people who think they have something worth losing. And Ilya is a treasure-trove of devastating self-worth issues. It takes him until That Incident in TLG to express anything approaching it, and it's arguably because he's terrified of never seeing Shane again.
Before that, the most he's ever expressed it (inwardly at least), is when he sees Shane wiped out on the ice.
So. It's gonna take a LOT to get him genuinely, deeply terrified, maybe.
I think he should be selfishly terrified, too. It has to go beyond just being scared that whatever happens to him will be so bad that it would break Shane in the aftermath: it should be something about himself that he's finally learned to cherish, that he's about to lose.
2: Pain
He's good at pain. He's a hockey player! He has to be! It's also a very fair assumption that he was raised in an environment where admitting to feeling it, is unforgivable. Again with the stoicism.
The canonical injuries he's absorbed are already abundant (Ribs! Teeth! Knees!) but all stillvery dealable with.
To break through his practiced defiance of vulnerability, the pain would have to be immediate (gotta tear that scream out). Severe, and with the promise of it lasting beyond what he already knows he can deal with. More than a bone break, probably. Something that even if he survives it, he'll never fully recover from.
...anyway I'm gonna do some reading about cut achilles tendons 👀
Confirmed! Way too giddy for a Monday! It's been noticed how smiley I am and the pep in my step. I tell my coworkers that it's because I went to the gym this morning before work. They don't need to know it's from a boy covered with blood. Help.
🦋
P.s. I will spend all day daydreaming about this and all the potential non-lethal situations. They did my boy so dirty.
BUTTERFLIES!
OH I am no help at all for this one. Some people just look infinitely better with blood on them, and I feel like we need more. So much more.
I just...all those little moments before it happens! When The Fan has his hand on him- he's pretending he's not immediately shutting down inside his own skin while he's being casually touched by his literal torturer, and he's trying to be so brave about it.
The shakiness. Even before the gun. His sad fucking eyes.
He absolutely deserved survivable torments. Even with an explosion : what about a good old fashioned sucking chest wound?! Or or or: the car itself catching fire, locks jammed, struggling to escape the heat and the smoke...

Ugh. Reading the posted ask, I thought I'd excitedly dictated a cohesive thought, but no. That was a mess. I was way too excited to get the words out and also kind of at work trying to be sneaky. I swear I do have the ability to express ideas with some semblance of narrative structure instead of stream of consciousness rambling. 🦋
But yes, axe butt tooooo the temple is music to my ears.
BUTTERFLIES! 💛
Please do not say unkind things to your wonderful brain about your beautiful Scenarios. ALSO it made perfect sense to my 3am brain. And my more awake one now. It is also juggernauting a bunch of scenarios into my head (I want him running through snowy, root-rugged forest terrain, blinking blood and sweat out of his eyes, skin being swiped and lashed at by winter-bare branches).
UNFORTUNATELY, my brain has reached the overthinking stage where it demands at least a niblet of plot, maybe even a hint of plausability (?) and then maybe some sideline angst (what if it happened after a version of the boxing day fight! etc.)
Which means it's currently festering in a document folder on the laptop. Kept captive, if you will.
You have released the kraken! Awakened the sleeping beast! Flipped the switch in my brain that allows for creativity.
Ideas flow and I have slept so well the last 2 days.
May you also be blessed with free flowing ideas very soon. Thank you
🦋
BUTTERFLIES! This is delight. Truly, the power of grievously injured pretty men is infinite.
Also, i am still sitting on the other ask (hunted for sport, you say?🥰) and mulling it in a way that now wants to turn the escalating scenario into an actual fic...
