Apparently, they were also clumsier than they had thought.

Some loose tarmac shifted beneath their feet, and they skidded left. They only narrowly avoided a collision. But no time to give it another thought.

The rhythm of their own feet was irregular and unreliable, but Whumper’s, closely behind, was steady as ever. Calculated. Determined.

Their tall frame had seemed alluring at first. They approached Whumpee with a book in hand and a question on their lips - Whumpee had indulged them ardently.

“Thanks, love. You’re a sweetheart.”

Such a disarming voice. Like a sweet poison.

Of course Whumpee had been charmed - they’d dare anyone to say they wouldn’t be. Whumper knew exactly how to make them feel desired; they knew they usually didn’t. God, how long have they been watching me? Just how much do they know? But no time to give it another thought.

It wasn’t fair. Not after they’d managed to lose them. Sure, maybe it had been naive of them to follow a stranger - even an attractive one - into the alley behind the store, but they’d escaped! Run off! Woven a maze through the neighbourhood! And still Whumper had caught up to them.

Now, here they were. Disadvantaged on all accounts, and losing hope, strength, stamina with every passing second.

They made another turn.

No.

No no no no no.

Should they keep running pointlessly towards the dead end? Or should they just give up now, at least get a chance to breathe before Whumper trapped them once again? Which would be less pathetic?

Evidently, their legs had chosen to crumple beneath them. Oh, good. Whumper will be greeted with the sorriest sight they possibly could.

“On your knees already?” They chuckled. “ Didn’t know you’d be so agreeable, Whumpee.”

It was just poison now. Prickly and jagged.

“That being said,” Whumper spat, “Get up.”

Whumpee didn’t think they could, even if they’d wanted to. Whoever said adrenaline was supposed to kick in and give you superpowers - they were a liar and a sadistic bastard. Whumpee felt deflated.

They continued to stare at the ground. A shadow crept over them.

“Perhaps you didn’t hear me. I said get,”—they wrenched Whumpee backward by the collar—”up!”

“I-'' They panted into the night air. “I can’t.”

“Sure you can!” Something metallic glinted suddenly at their side. “Can’t you?”

Their nod was more like trembling.

With imprecision and laboured thought, they slowly pushed themself upward, unsure of how long the effect would last. They twisted round to face Whumper. They were already on borrowed time.

“Such an obedient little thing, aren’t you?”

Whumper advanced towards them. They stepped back.

“Oh don’t go shy on me now. I thought we were having a grand old time.”

“W-what are you going to do to me?”

They flashed a smile and sighed, “I haven’t decided yet.”

The knife raised slightly in their hand, as if in anticipation.

“But it starts, I think, with you taking that coat off so I can get a good look at my canvas.”

They barely had time to consider doing so before Whumper ripped it off of them and tossed it aside.

“Now,”—Whumpee flew back into the wall, brick grazing their shoulders as Whumper pressed their arm across their throat, letting the blade dance across Whumpee’s skin—”Let’s see what I’m working with.”
