Okay, Anon- love the prompt. Here you go - this takes place after the season 3 Finale, I hope you like it!
Choosing Trust
Despite what her mother thought or perhaps in spite of it, Chloe Bourgeois knew quality. It was why, as much as she hates to admit it, she wakes up painstakingly early to go to the Dupain-Cheng bakery for breakfast every morning.
In times past, she would make her Fatherâs personnel fetch her breakfast from the Bakery. But, with the elections mere months away, her Daddy claimed that he needed all the hands he could get. So now, she was left to get it herself.
âIf there were better,â she thought but never finished as she donned her âdisguiseâ. She had a reputation to maintain; being seen entering or leaving the Dupain-Cheng Bakery, her self-declared enemyâs home â would be like admitting defeat. But really, all she did was leave her hair loose and slip a pair of over-sized sunglasses over her face but it was enough to make her feel unrecognizable.
She also wouldnât admit to anyone, but right now, she liked feeling anonymous. Liked that her outward appearance was just as unrecognizable as her inner jumble of thoughts. That whole ordeal with Hawkmoth a few months back was⊠well, it didnât do to think about it. Especially now, when the bakery was just starting to fill with the warmth associated with freshly baked bread. Chloe lingered in the doorway, as was her usual custom, waiting for at least three other early risers to make their purchase.
She strode forward as the last coin dropped onto the counter, considering that maybe she should try a new pastry instead of getting another spinach-gouda croissant, but dismissed the desire as a passing fancy â the spinach-gouda croissant was salty, warm, and familiar. And in the face of everything having changed for the worse â familiar was something she desperately craved.
âGood-morning Chloe.â
Chloe stopped a foot short of the counter and did a double take, in Sabineâs place stood Marinette.
âI, I want a spinach-gouda croissant.â Despite her shock she wouldnât say please, she was talking to her arch-rival after all.
âTheyâre not ready yet,â Marinette said gravely with a straight face.
Chloe looked at the full display of spinach-gouda croissants through the counter glass and raised her eyebrows, ââŠRight. Look Dupain-Cheng, just give me my breakfast and we can pretend this never happened.â
âSeriously,â Chloe thought pinching the bridge of her nose, âwhatâs with this girl?â
âHow about you come to the back and I make you some tea while we wait for the croissants to bake?â Marinette offered as if her request were nothing out of the ordinary. âBesides, thereâs something I want to ask you.â
âOkaay,â Chloe had no idea why she was agreeing to this. She told herself it was because she would receive a free cup of tea and an extra fresh breakfast, but really, the truth was simpler â it was the first time since the⊠Hawkmoth situation that someone had shown her positive attention. Even if the kindness was false, since Marinette clearly outlined that she was doing this to get something out of her, it was nice to be on the receiving end of it all the same.
She sipped delicately at the jasmine tea and waited for Marinette to speak first. Marinette clutched her teacup like it was a life-line and took a long gulp before beginning with âChloe, I need to travel to Lhasa for a week forâŠpersonal reasons.â
âTibet,â Marinette clarified when Chloe sent her a blank look.
âSo you want me to what⊠take notes for you while youâre gone?â
Marinette waved a hand, âNo, no â thank you, but I have Alya covering me for that.â
âThen why are you telling me this?â Chloe tossed her hair over her shoulder, âI swear, if this is a mean prank to make me late for school, then I ââ
âI want you to be Ladybug while Iâm gone!â Marinette blurted out.
Static overtook Chloeâs brain. Marinette was Ladybug? But then. But then that meant that Marinette knew how, how awful she was both in and out of the mask why would she want? Why would she want her to be Ladybug? Chloeâs near-empty teacup clattered onto the table.
âThatâs a sick joke,â Chloe declared as she stood up, âWhereâs the camera? Are your little friends watching?â
Tears fogged Chloeâs eyes â breakfast be damned. This was just cruel.
Chloeâs eyes snapped to Marinette, âIf it were true, then why me? Why not any of your other friends?â
Marinetteâs grip tightened briefly on her sleeve, âBecause none of them would be as good!â
ââŠWhat?â
âPlease, sit back down. I can explain, I promise.â
Marinette released her sleeve and sat carefully down, as if Chloe was a wild animal that would spook at any fast movements. Chloe wiped the gathering tears with the back of her hand, grimacing inwardly at the smear of blue and black that was left behind. She knew she should have used waterproof mascara that morning.
âAlright, talk.â Chloe demanded imperiously as she picked up her teacup.
Marinette inhaled noisily, âOk, well. Iâve been watching you since Hawkmoth ââ
âI donât want to talk about that,â Chloe interrupted.
âAlright,â Marinette said soothingly, âSo since thatâŠday you didnât leave for New York⊠I noticed how, without having any distractionsâŠâ
Chloe snorted at Marinetteâs delicate wording, of course she would be too polite to say âsince you lost all your friendsâ but otherwise remained quiet.
ââŠand without you bullying me, how creative you got with your designs. Youâre crafty in ways that no one suspects. Crafty enough to rival me,â Marinette paused to take a sip of her own tea, Â
âThe Ladybug is creativity and kindness itself. It needs someone like me.â
âLike you,â Marinette corrected, âto reach its full potential. And as guardian, I deem you worthy.â
When no more words came from Marinette, Chloe tried to poke holes into Marinetteâs reasoning, âBut how can you say that? How can you be sure I wonât abuse the power and keep the miraculous for myself? Or that I wonât turn to Hawkmoth again?â
Marinetteâs eyes pinned her down, âWould you?â
Chloe cast her eyes away from Marinetteâs, âIt happened last time. And the time before that.â
âTrue,â Marinette said softly and slid a lacquered box towards her, âBut I have a feeling that you wonât this time. Iâm choosing to trust you to do the right thing. Itâs up to you to choose to honor that trust.â
Chloeâs hands trembled as her fingers closed around the box, âThank you.â
On her way out, Chloe paused at the counter.
âOh Chloe, dear,â Mrs. Dupain-Cheng said cheerfully, âA new batch of spinach-gouda croissants just came out â how many would you like.â

So! Quick drabble/bullet list on expert-pickpocket!marinette? I love them, personally
-It started small - when she accidentally stole Adrienâs phone and thought âThat was a close one!â followed closely by â...I can do betterâ
- When she discovered that the library offered scant resources (because what school in their right mind teaches children how to become pick-pockets?) she turns to the internetÂ
- She uses her mannequin as a practice model, attaching bells to a coat and pants that jostle loudly at the slightest brush.
- Marinette is thorough so she films herself âmaking passesâ at the mannequin to see if sheâs being obvious (because a mirror only reveals so much). Later, she tries to show Tikki. Tikki praises the attention to detail that Marinette exhibits but holds back on praise for the hobby itself because âitâs un-Ladybug-likeâ
- Once again, Marinette turns to the internet and posts her videos for technique-correction. One commenter replies that if she wants to see her skills improve, they found that learning sleight-of-hand-magic tricks worked wonders for them.Â
-To her delight, the library has an amazing hobby section that includes books on magic tricks.Â
- Tikki, not realizing that the Magic Trick books are for the pick-pocket hobby enthusiastically encourages this hobby. Marinette feels slightly guilty for not telling the truth on why she decided to check the books out.Â
- While Marinette is practicing card tricks, Adrien smiles casually and mentions that his cousin is really into magic as well and offers to get them in touch with each other - after all, Felix could use a friend and they can bond easily with this shared hobby. Adrien walks away thinking how great it will be - maybe Marinette will be allowed to visit when Felix visits because then it would technically be Felix having a friend over, not Adrien.Â
- Turns out the faithful commenter on the forum was Felix all along - which excites Marinette.Â
- Felix mentors Marinette and acts as a fail-safe for Marinetteâs first lifts by acting as a distractor when/if the Mark gets suspicious.
- Together they also legitimately practice their magic tricks as well and develop a bunch of in-jokes, joyously laughing out loud at each other both through magic and pick-pocketing triumphs and fails. Adrien tries not to feel left out when he hears the laughter echoing down the guest hallway, unsure of how to join in.Â
- Adrien gets mad when Plagg tells him that they are practicing pick-pocketing. He tries to tell Marinette off and Felix rounds on Adrien saying âWeâve never kept a single item- itâs all in good fun.âÂ
- Back in the room, Plagg says maybe to meet them half-way by learning magic tricks himself âAfter all, sleight of hand is a useful skill for Chat Noir.âÂ
- Eventually, the magic trick duo becomes a magic trick trio.Â
Yo, I really enjoyed making Choosing Trust so instead of other fics I thought itâd be fun to continue down that prompt.Â
Choosing Trust: Family Knowledge
Marinette sighed as she watched her best friend and confidante and Chloe walk away.
âIt couldnât be helped,â Marinette thought. Paris needed a Ladybug and Marinette was needed elsewhere.
Days ago, Marinette had found, quite by accident, her summons to the Guardianâs temple clutched in her motherâs hands when she arrived late from a Kitty Section practice session.
âHey mom,â Marinette said lightly, not noticing how her mother clutched a scrap of paper in her hands, âYou didnât have to wait you know, I was only five minutes ââ
âMarinette.â Her mother said, tone tense.
She stiffened. Her mother only used that tone for two instances: when she was deeply in trouble or when something was deeply troubling. Immediately Marinette cast her mind back trying to think of anything that she could have done to earn that tone. When it came up blank, Marinette began to panic. Wang Cheng sprung to the forefront of her mind â heâd had an accident recently. If her mother was using that tone then it must be worse than Marinette had thought.
âIs Uncle Cheng alright?â Marinette asked in a tiny voice. âWere his hands worse off than the doctors had initially thought?â
Momentarily confused, her mother shook her head. âWhat? No, no â your uncle is fine. It was just a stress fracture.â
Sabine then held up the letter with the Temple Guardianâs insignia facing Marinette, âDo you know what this is? What it means?â
Marinette forcibly kept her breathing easy and feigned ignorance. âNo,â she lied easily.
âWhat is It?â
Marinette waited for her mother to draw her eyebrows down â as she did whenever she caught Marinette telling a fib. But the moment never came. Instead, her mother drew a ragged breath.
âI think you should sit down.â
Marinette complied and sat very still, waiting for her mother to start talking first. Her mother stared at the ceiling for several long minutes before looking down at the space in between them before meeting her daughterâs concerned gaze.
âDo you remember the news about the miraculous reappearance of that temple in the Tibetan mountains?â Her mother began lowly.
Mutely, Marinette nodded. The reappearance of the temple had plastered the news for a better part of the month before coverage of Queen Wasp had taken over. A person would have had to have lived under a rock to have missed the implications of a temple suddenly reappearing like that. Especially since it suddenly supported the Ladyblogâs âcrazyâ theory of a secret order directing Miraculous appearances.
âWellâŠâ her mother took another deep inhale through her nose, âThe news was right â itâs no ordinary temple. In its heyday, it housed great magic and those that were chosen to walk those sacred halls became Guardians.â
âMom?â Marinette interjected. Her voice wavered, âHow do you knowâ?â
Her mother raised a single eyebrow, effectively silencing her daughterâs interruption and continued, âThough most Guardians lived within the walls of the temple, they were not bound to it. Guardians were free, and were encouraged even, to travel. To walk the lands helping those that needed help the most. So, when the Guardianâs Temple suddenly disappeared, precious few of the order survived. And those that survived continued on teaching the core lessons, but not the magic, throughout the generations.â
Her mother paused and looked at Marinette, âDo you understand what Iâm saying so far?â
âIâŠthink so,â Marinette lied. In truth, her thoughts were whirling recklessly through her mind. If her mother knew all this then that meant⊠That meant⊠Her mind shut down â refusing to process her thoughts.
Meanwhile, her mother nodded, ignorant of her daughterâs inner distress. âGood, good.â She said half-absentmindedly, âWhere was I? Oh yes. So. What does this letter mean? And how can I know all of this? Well. When great, great Grandmother Ya married her husband, this secret was revealed to her â which she passed down to her children who finally passed it down to me when the time was right.â
Sabine wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, âI had hoped that there was a better way to introduce you to all of this or, better yet, never have had to talk to you about this ever. But, we are where we are.â
Sabine finally relinquished the letter into Marinetteâs waiting hands, âSweetie. Iâm so sorry but youâve been summoned.â
The words, once uttered, echoed strangely in Marinetteâs ears, conveying an importance that should have been impossible to convey verbally. Â But logically, Marinette knew that she should have been expecting something like this â after all, the appearance of the Guardianâs Temple and Master Fuâs passing down of the guardianship happened too close together for fate to not interfere.
If she thought about it, it made sense that she would be summoned.
But she hadnât.
Hadnât truly thought about the implications of becoming a Guardian. How could she have? It all happened while she was under duress. Paris had been at stake â in the moment there was no time to think of anything else. And after? Too much came too fast so the meaning of guardianship was shunted to the back of her mind.
But now?
The finality of her motherâs words rang deeply in her psyche.
Summons.
Guardianship and all that entailed.
Marinetteâs mother took notice of her daughterâs eyes widening and how each breath became more shallow than the last. She grasped her hands, âDear. Breathe with me.â
Once Marinette was capable of pulling air into her lungs steadily her mother ran her thumb over her daughterâs knuckles, âIt canât be ignored.â
âIâm sorry,â her mother gathered Marinette in her arms and apologized over and over again softly. âIt canât be ignored.â
âYou must have been recognized as being exceptional,â Sabine murmured in a soothing tone, âIâm so proud of you.â
âIâŠ,â Anything Marinette had been planning on saying died in her throat. Her identity was safe, but another lie had sprouted to shield her mother from the truth of who she really was. And what could she say anyways? âNo mom, the only reason I was summoned was because I was Ladybug before I was named Guardian by Master Fu?â
She couldnât. She wasnât exceptional. But there was no way to explain all of this to her mother without revealing everything so instead she just swallowed down anything that went contrary to her motherâs imagination and said,
âIâm going to make you proud â I promise.â
They clutched each other tightly.
When they pulled apart, Marinette studied the letter. It was straightforward thanks to the grueling hours she had spent studying Han characters under her motherâs tutelage. The Guardians wanted her to travel to Lhasa (in any way she deemed necessary) â when she arrived, there would be an emissary waiting to guide her into their sacred hall to begin âthe guardian trialsâ.
Beyond that, the letter only stipulated that she bring her âmost precious items of passage.â
âWhat about Dad?â Marinette questioned.
âDonât mind your father,â her mother dismissed without a thought. âHe understands as well as I do how important something like this is.â
Marinetteâs eyebrows creased slightly at her motherâs words but she didnât comment, not sure she wanted to learn everything she didnât know about her parentâs marriage. Some cans of worms, she thought, are best left unopened.
Her eyes dropped back down to the creased paper and committed each step to memory before tearing it into fine shreds.
âMom,â She said slowly. She brought her eyes up to her motherâs, wide blue eyes meeting dark brown, âI love you and Dadâ you know that right?â
Marinette wasnât sure why she was suddenly desperate to hear her motherâs affirmation. It wasnât like a visit to the temple would take too long â after all, she had already gotten some training under her belt thanks to Master Fu. But something about the atmosphere made Marinette feel like it would be the last time she would be able to see her mother for a while.
An absurd thought.
But one that nonetheless pulled the question out of her mouth before she even realized what she asked. Her mother didnât even hesitate.
âI love you now and Iâll love you for another thousand years,â her mother replied firmly.
Marinetteâs eyes slid shut momentarily as she locked the familiar phrase into her memory.
âBefore I go,â Marinette began, âI need to plan a few things outâŠâ

Hope you guys had as much fun reading that as I had writing that. Originally, I had planned on writing Chloe out further but I felt that switching between Marinette and Chloe would be more interesting.Â
Ok, I did the lightest amount of research into this. So. For this AU there is no Tikki, the kwami, No miraculous. Just an average girl, living an average life muddling through a condition that she was working to fix:
The glint of a wristwatch caught Marinetteâs eye.
Absentmindedly, Marinette scratched at her left ring finger even though she knew this particular itch wouldnât end until the wristwatch was sitting on her own wrist. She couldnât - wouldnât - take the watch (taking the watch would represent a step back that she wasnât sure her parents could bear), but heard its pristine ticking in her head anyway, perfectly measuring out the day.Â
It ground in her ears until the rest of the world drained away.Â
Today was a tough day, she thought.Â
She examined her thought and her brows furrowed. It was exactly that kind of thinking that was dangerous. She knew that now. Mme. Tikki, her therapist, had emphasized that it was up to her to recognize her own unhealthy thoughts first and then act.Â
She continued to scratch at her finger as she trailed her mark.Â
Ok, she thought, I canât steal the watch. What to do, what to do...
Marinette easily matched the speed of and followed the blond man through the crowd as she pondered.Â
What if I donât steal the watch... but just try to touch it unnoticed?
Marinette smiled to herself. it was the perfect way to satisfy her itch AND show that she could remain in control. She couldnât wait to tell Mme. Tikki!
The watch was a breath away from her finger tips, all she had to do was just slightlyÂ

and!
The stranger caught her hand was caught in a vice grip.Â
Marinette gaped and met the strangerâs gaze.Â
His green eyes gazed down at hers in shock. She floundered for what to say - it seemed like every half-formed explanation came tumbling out at once.Â
(âI didnât-! My therapist-! Iâm so!â)
For his part, the stranger seemed to listen as patiently as he could as he scanned the area behind her shoulder.Â
âOf course, of course, I understandâ he said quickly, distractedly. âIâm sorry for grab- oh shit!â He broke off suddenly, pulling her around a corner.Â
As soon as they had taken cover behind a pair of recycling bins, Marinette pulled her hand away from the stranger and took off at full speed, heart pounding.Â

Adrien opened his mouth to reassure the girl - but it was too late. All he could do was helplessly watch the mystery girlâs sleek, black pigtails bounce as she sprinted away.
Moments later, his bodyguardâs large hand clamped down on his shoulder and Adrien found himself sighing - not because he had been caught but because he hadnât even gotten her name.
