Now that you’re settling into life at Memorial, you’re probably also getting familiar with getting around town. Despite the city’s unique layout, navigation is made simple with the various modes of transportation to, from and around campus. Check out all of these ways to get around St. John’s and you’ll soon know the city like the back of your hand!
• Metrobus. The primary source of public transportation in St. John’s. The various bus routes travel to different areas of the city and into Mount Pearl. The University Centre is one of the main stops along many of the routes, making the campus accessible by bus. Students can purchase the right bus pass to suit their needs on campus at The Attic (third floor of the University Centre).
• Student CarShare. A new service in St. John’s, Student CarShare allows students 18 or older to rent vehicles at affordable hourly rates. Wanting to take a trip to Cape Spear or head downtown for some shopping? This is a great way to go. Vehicles for rent are conveniently parked on campus near our student residences and at apartment buildings close to campus.
• MUN BikeShare. This group is made up of student volunteers who operate a bike rental service for students. The rentals are very affordable and they provide a great way to get around town. There are also bike racks (some covered) and bike lockers (for rent) on campus for storage during your time here.
• SafeDrive & WalkSafe. When you become a student at Memorial, you’ll also become a member of the MUN Students’ Union (MUNSU). MUNSU provides a number of different services, including a couple targeted at student safety. SafeDrive provides students a free ride home from campus in the evenings, within certain proximity from the University. WalkSafe allows students to have a volunteer accompany them around campus (i.e., back to your residence) after dark.
• RideShare. If you’re a commuter student that needs a ride to campus, check out RideShare. Once you’re a Memorial student, log into my.mun.ca and see the Rideshare portal. Students who are looking to carpool post there either wanting or offering rides to/from campus, along with their contact information.
Of course, the obvious alternative to all of these modes of transportation is walking! While the campus itself is only about a fifteen minute walk away from the downtown area, be prepared for a longer, more strenuous journey back up those hills ☺
