see you soon. the text had been clear and to the point, couched in the idea of tossing more apples around the orchard now that a few weeks had passed. they'd gotten slightly bigger, they could always be relied on to fill the space between thoughts. instead, she waited, listening for the bike that would make its way down the lane, the low rumble that had some how become a recent addition to the sounds on the property.
she could feel the small flicker of relief at his arrival, uncontrolled, but quietly there all the same. he'd wanted to come over, for whatever reason, and she couldn't deny that she wanted to see him. even if it was superficial, she could go get ciders from the fridge and let it all fall away. she rarely let others set the terms of a conversation, and yet here she was on the porch, putting out her cigarette, waiting for him to be in earshot so she could say, "have a nice dinner?"
