Frankie (121 m./F/Warrior) asks Ash (251 m./M/Kittypet) about the weird cat she and Oddie saw in the tunnels.
Frankie was supposed to go hunting.
She was supposed to teach Featherkit how to scavenge, but she gave him the afternoon off. She had something more important to do, and she worried that he might get hurt if he followed her through the territories, close to the main camp of the Blinding, and down to Ash's home.
"Hey…" She hung her head low. Every muscle in her body was tense. She needs to explore more places. She needs to feel the rush of a fight again. Has it always been this hot? Has her head and stomach always hurt this much? She can't remember. "Ash, are you there?"
The old brown cat popped out from behind the counter, sliding between human legs and meeting up with her outside. "What's wrong, Frankie? You look terrible."
"I need your insight. What are those cats?"
"Who? What do you mean? Are you hurt?"
Yes. She is. But it's nothing she can't fix with a walk and some rest. She likes it. She likes being sore after a fight. She likes the anticipation of the first blow. It took her so long to realize that instead of running from conflict, running from her former house, running from the mutt that took her place, running from rogues, running from her issues, she should face it head on. It's much more enjoyable.
But this is not why she's here.
"I'm not hurt. I have two questions for you."
They settled down on a sunny, whirring box. Ash told her once that when it stopped whirring, the temperatures rise in their home, where humans get their food. He doesn't mind it but humans hate it.
"I'm listening. I don't know if I will be able to answer, but I'll do what I can."
Frankie was still twitchy, unable to relax. "Oddie and I explored around and we found a… weird cat. It was talking about rot and souls and had a raspy voice and empty eyes and—"
"The Coven," Ash stopped her. "You met a cat from the Coven, but from the looks of it, they were already too far gone."
"What are they?"
"I know I shouldn't judge but… They're lunatics who worship 'the Rot', so death and decay, and by extension mushrooms and the Madness that overcomes certain animals. If I recall correctly."
She slowly nodded, processing that information.
"I don't know if that helps but…"
"It does, thank you."
"What's your second question?"
Frankie folded her paws neatly, trying to appear more serious. "If you join the Blinding, is it permanent?"
"But it's like any group, you have an oath of allegiance to uphold…" His eyes wandered to the twoleg nest, eerily quiet in the day and deafening in the night. "Why?"
She kept quiet.
"Don't tell me you want to join the Blinding?"
"I made a promise to the Bartender, but I don't know where she is. I fear that she may have abandoned the Bar, our sanctuary. She abandoned me. She abandoned us."
Ah. Yes. The Bartender. The spirit Frankie is certain she can see. Ash is certain that it's just a hallucination, but if she can see it, then it's true to her.
"She'll come back."
"I don't know…" She rested her head on the box, tail swishing in annoyance. "I don't see why I should stay. I want to fight. All day long. You told me that it's what the Blinding do."
"The Blinding are a lawless lot who do not care about the weak and worship the body and phsyical prowess and go to great lengths to become stronger. Their hobby is beating up each-other. I don't think that's fun… They take in a lot of outsiders, but the competition for access to basic survival needs is rough."
"How do you know all of that?"
"They're my rowdy neighbors…" Ash sighed. "I'd rather deal with the Bone Society. They're a danger to everyone, but they are quiet."
"I don't know…"
"If you don't want to stay at the Bar, as I said, my human likes you. We can find a way to take you in."
For once, she didn't say no, but "I want to say good-bye to the Bartender before leaving. If by the time the young ones are adults I didn't see her, I'll leave and figure out what I do."
Ash nodded. "Sounds like a plan. I hope I will be there to see it."
"You? Yeah, you're a spring chicken," Frankie purred. "Can I try to rest here, for a while?"
Frankie (119 m./F/Warrior) crosses a border to meet up with a friend.
The stench of The Blinding parties filled the atmosphere as Frankie quietly crossed their territory.
Leaving the bar unnoticed was not easy. The kittens are noisy: Ghost tried to argue with her as she also wanted to go on an adventure, which woke up Featherkit who just wanted a conversation.
She helped them go back to sleep, and slipped out of the Bar, running in the night and crossing the city, mindful of cars, humans, dogs, machines, anything that would slow her down. But she knows the way by heart, now. It's not the first time she runs away, crossing enemy territories.
She found herself facing a place where humans get their food, and pet food, and other necessities – she now knows this place well.
The spotted tabby signaled her arrival and an elderly grayish-brown cat walked out.
"Frankie! I thought you couldn't come, tonight."
She purred. "I have my ways."
They settled down indoors, where the human nest was still open. She would still not let Ash's human – a male with reddish fur on his face and head and light clothing – pet her, but he let her wander in and out as she pleased. He would sometimes talk to her, and it sounded affectionate, but she could not understand what they were saying.
"Won't the cats from the Bar become suspicious? Don't spend your time with me if you have a community."
"Silly you," she affectionately nudged him. "I always have time for my friends. So what if they become suspicious?"
"Aren't they your friends, too?"
She lowered her head. "I don't know. The Bartender is my friend. Minha is very kind to me. I don't know the kittens that well. Oddie and I are… Well, they can't trust anyone fully, and you know how I am."
Ash purred. "A ray of sunshine who's best friends with everyone?"
"Exactly!"
They jumped on top of a machine that keeps food cold and they loafed, watching humans pass by, get necessities in exchange for shiny flat pebbles.
"You still won't join us?" Frankie asked.
"No, I'm too old for this. And I like my human and his mate. Don't you want to come live here?"
She did not reply. For a moment, she was revolted at the mere thought of betraying the Bartender like that. Be away from her light and savior? How could she? But a life with a kind human and a friend and safety does sound nice.
"I don't know…" She sighed. "I don't want to hurt anyone."
"You wouldn't harm anyone."
Wouldn't she? They all hunt to eat. She killed a dog for her own survival. Harm is part of a life cycle. There has been an itch in the back of her mind, craving some action. Yearning for a fight. Sinking her claws into something feels good and the meal she has afterwards is worth it.
"I'm sure they would understand. And I would understand if you want to stay with them." Ash reassured her.
"Thank you." She said, wanting to enjoy the few hours she had with her friend far from her home. But she has to leave, at some point. She knows it.
So Ash gave her a bag of cat treats, behind his human's back, and let her go back to the bar.
Frankie has been distant since she left Oddie at the hands of the twolegs, and they noticed it. She barely speaks as they hunt. She follows plans when she sees no other alternative. She keeps to herself and to the Bartender.
Oddie never trusted her. They appreciate her company, but the fact that she left them alone a few moons ago broke any hope of ever forming a real bond with her. But they're used to being alone. They're used to not trusting others. It just so happens that, this time, he lives with this specific cat.
The one thing they can trust her with is keeping secrets. They wandered far away from the Bar, today. Deep in the undergrounds of this twoleg nest. Neither knew that twolegs made burrows, but the colorful lights and absence of noise drew them in.
A cacophony of meows and purrs rose from a hole in the wall, followed by a faint smell of cinder. They both silently approached the entrance and peered inside.
From what they could see, two dozen cats were gathered inside around a small fire. Some were purring for no reason. Others were playing and jumping around. Others were huddled around catnip, and Oddie wondered where they found that. Others were sharing twoleg food and playing with the metallic tube-shaped peel. A yowl screeched from one side of the shelter, as a body dropped to the floor and others cheered.
"What's that?" Frankie wrinkled her nose at the display of debauchery.
"The Blinding."
A voice rang from behind them. An old, fluffy lilac tom with a rainbow collar around their neck.
"How long have you been following us, for?" Oddie asked, their fur already bristling.
"Following you?" He seemed almost insulted. "This is my home. You are the ones snooping around where you don't belong."
His tail pointed to a twoleg nest. It was full of displayed twoleg food, in all shapes and sizes and colors. The white lights inside were bright as the sun, but that's where the scent of food came from.
"Please, excuse them," Frankie said, before Oddie could have a chance to reply. "We have been used to people following us and threatening us. It's nothing personal, I assure you."
"I see…" The cat's eyes drifted into nowhere, almost lost in thought. "I wouldn't recommend meeting up with the Blinding. It seems fun to join them on the outside, but the inner workings of this never-ending party are not what you would expect."
"How would you know that?"
"As I said, I live here. I see it all. They know me and I know them. The less you know, the better it is."
Another loud cheer erupted from their camp, every other noise muffled by the crowd, no doubt cheering on more cats fighting.
Frankie stepped forward. "Thank you for the warning. How should I refer to you?"
"Call me Ash."
"Will we see you again, Ash?"
"If you're ready to cross the border of the Blinding territory, yes. You know where to find me, I will be there with my human." He invited. "And how should I refer to you?"
She smiled, something Oddie has rarely seen her do with someone that is not the Bartender. "I'm Frankie."
