it was easy to excuse herself from the pew inconspicuously – she was only barely near the front, the mexican relatives taking priority of course. with fifteen minutes until the marisol would grace the aisle – she had a moment to give her brother a last nag and deliver an embroidered handkerchief, snagged from one of the boxes antonia had stowed away. three knocks, and another three knocks, and yet another, led her to trying the door for herself. curiosity would lead her back and around the church, until a familiar scent of tobacco lingered near. “ what in god’s name are you doing OUT here ?? “
