Classes and Postcards
Well, I’m still prowling the ocean like a shark- though i’m prowling for housing.
The desperation and need to move into a bigger place is so pressing. The weight is SO heavy. It’s consuming my roommates and I because we have so little time. None the less, I’ve been making art here and there. I unintentionally did an experiment where I did 2 pieces of art over a couple of days; one was in a more sketchy style that I enjoy and the other was what I thought people looking for children's books would want. They both turned out nice but the kids book style scene feels SO generic and boring I could cry because my heart wasn't in it.
After frustratingly looking at these 2 pieces and realizing what had happened, I fell back and did some sketching in my own whatever-style that I just futz about with. It FELT so good compared to the tedious coloring and stylizing I had been sticking too with the kids book picture.. The sketches weren't amazing but the light bulb went on. All that stuff i’d read about doing what YOU love and putting what YOU want to duplicate and be hired for in your portfolio slapped me upside the head. The scary truth of needing balance and incorporating what I can do with my own likes and how I can pull from and bring in what is marketable, became all too glaring.
I then attempted to paint a sketch I liked like some of my favorite artists and failed miserably. I’m not sure if its the brushes or opacity settings... but blending and coloring is my big weakness. It turns into chunky, messy stumbling instead of pretty painterly style.I’m specifically looking into classes such as:
Painting with light and color via schoolism. (https://www.schoolism.com/school.php?id=30 )
Digital Painting 1

Working with Color
Painting Fur and Hair

and maybe Creative Composition

Since I’m not currently in school anymore, I’d like to seek out the things I wanted to learn most in digital painting. That was: using and painting color and light AND- creative composition for picture books.
There’s lots of resource on YouTube but it’s nice to take mini classes geared directly toward a student.
I also bit the bullet a applied my domain name to the site i’m using for a portfolio. It feels really good and official. I wanted it as such before contacting agencies and sending mailers/making business cards. Speaking of, a couple post card people i’m looking into are:
http://www.modernpostcard.com/
https://www.4by6.com/products/postcards
https://www.overnightprints.com/
___________
Meanwhile, i’m committing to doing more sketching and pieces that i’m actually happy with..even if they don’t really have rhyme or reason but still closely following good things to put toward a children's book portfolio.. :)
Sincerely,
an illustrator

Anatomy
1. Andrew Loomis - Figure Drawing for All it’s Worth
2. Andrew Loomis - Drawing Head and Hand
3. Bridgman – Constructive Anatomy
4. Bridgman – The Human Machine
5. Burne Hogarth – Drawing Dynamic hands
6. Burne Hogarth – Drawing the Human head
7. Burne Hogarth – Dynamic Figure Drawing
8. Christopher Hart – Drawing Cutting Edge Anatomy
9. Eadweard Muybridge - The Human Figure In Motion
10. Robert Beverly - Anatomy lessons from the great masters
11. Stephen Rogers - Atlas of Human Anatomy for the artist
Forewords by IRCSS: Don’t push yourself with anatomy. It comes with time, if you read three or four of these books; you should already have more than enough theory to work with. All that’s left is to truly understand them and that takes a while.
Perspective
1. Gwen White – Perspective: A Guide for Artists. Architects and Designers
2. Joseph D’Amelio – Perspective Drawing Handbook
Color Theorem
1. James Gurney – Color and Light
2. Betty Edwards – A Color Course in Mastering The Art of Mixing Colors
3. Munsell – Munsell Book of Color
Forwords by IRCSS: James Gurney is a must read. Betty Edwards has some interesting information but also LOTS of wrong ones which is embarrassing for such famous of an instructor. Munsell Book of Color, is the Bible, and I am not even joking. Most of the current color spaces such Adobe ones, LAB and … have been based upon it. It is as close as you would ever get to understanding color as a painter.
Composition
1. Molly Bang – Picture this
General
Betty Edwards – The New Drawing on the Right side of the Brain
Andrew Loomis - Creative Illustration
Andrew Loomis – Successful Drawing
Andrew Loomis – The Eye Of The Painter
Forwords by IRCSS: On the right side of the brain is a very good read for those who want to start off as artists. And Andrew Loomis’s collection is a must read that I think might even be available online as PDFs since it went out of publications a while back.
