I believe art is a powerful tool that can be used to communicate deeply about issues facing the community. Mainstream media may report on them but, is it enough? Retrogressive practices are deeply rooted and normal to some people, while in real sense they are violating human rights. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are just but examples of the practices. They leave many households and women sleepless at night. They leave permanent soul scars and damage that may be difficult to mend. They leave psychological injuries that may result to other problems, practices and conditions unthought of. To make matters worse, the perpetrators of such acts may go unpunished. Well, I do not tolerate any of that and believe in humanity for all. Itâs almost impossible not to cringe at the idea of getting an injection, even if you are a self-proclaimed woman of steel like myself. In its recently launched campaign cleverly entitled The Art of Saving a Life, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seeks to usurp the unsavory imagery associated with needles pricking skin, and instead replace it with an altogether more pleasant, or at the very least evocative, sentiment. Americaâs true power couple (a term too often associated with a fleeting relationship between A-list silver-screeners in my humble opinion) sets the precedent for selflessness and giving among the nation and worldâs ultra-wealthy. Ever bespectacled and poised, Bill and Melinda are supporting this new venture to promote vaccinations and help everyone, especially those in developing nations, gain access to life-saving vaccines. Brilliantly, they chose artists as the movementâs voice and art as its vehicle.Â

Why is this brilliant?Â
For starters, no one wants to see the needles, band aids and shrieking toddlers, who have an uncanny ability to transport us back to our own aichmophobic episodes, à la covers of doctorsâ office âliterature.â Plus, weâve become rather numb to advertisements when they look like advertisements. Think of it like this - when youâre scrolling through your now ad-saturated Facebook newsfeed, you can easily detect the difference between a companyâs ad post and friend activity (even as marketers try to make their material look ânaturalâ). In the case of The Art of Saving a Life, the works of art produced by artists across varying forms of media, disengage themselves with generic forms of promotional, awareness-raising material and instead intrigue us into their (very very honorable) cause.Â

In an earlier article from The New York Times, Melena Ryzik notes that the campaign âbrings a fashion-y aestheticâ to disease, presumably a rather unfashionable topic. To Ryzikâs point, photographer Alexia Sinclair referenced her Tableau of Vaccination, explaining that she âwanted to create something that looked at smallpox, but did it in a way that didnât repulse people.â Her composition, complete with an Alexander McQueen-esque gown-makeup-hair combo, a dreamy field of lavender giving rise to eighteenth century salon shelves, and a doctor seemingly plucked from a Hogarth print, is decidedly compelling. Bravo, Alexia.  Secondly, this effort is brilliant because of its smartly placed focus on harnessing the power of art as a conversation starter. Truth: you donât have to âgetâ art to talk about it. In fact, many of the conversations Iâve been in concerning art have sprung from the very not-getting-it nature of it all (yes Iâm looking at you man at the Ellsworth Kelly exhibit).
