Darcy liked to embellish those around her. She liked to look at those on the street or in a coffee shop and imagine them as she saw things. People with bright red veins under their skin and flowers growing from their scalps. Hollowed out eyes and bones poking through their cheeks and horns. This is how she liked to draw people. She would sit with an A5 sketch book and an HB pencil, and draw these slightly horrific creatures around her. It made the time pass. She liked getting her odd, watery thoughts splashed onto paper.
This is what she did on the tube this evening. Her page had several sketches: the dry hands of the man she sat across from, fidgeting and clawed; a woman nearby had been reimagined with fur and cat’s eyes. The girl she was currently drawing was young and pretty, and in her sketch had water pouring from her mouth, and scales. Darcy didn’t try to be too subtle - nobody ever paid her any attention, with her dark coat and small stature.
She was shading, adding a liquid shimmer to the girl’s neck, when she looked up for reference and found that she was being stared back at. They made eye contact, for a second, but Darcy looked away and shut her sketchbook. Embarrassed. She very deliberately kept her eyes on her lap now, uncomfortable. She felt guilty for using this person for her own creative gains.
