Aside from potential geographic issues (Norway hadn’t quite penetrated the scene in the late ‘80s), there wasn’t really any reason for Artch not to have broken through: Another Return wasn’t startlingly original, even by power metal standards, but it was dynamic and accessible, as well as perfectly timed considering the onslaught of classic power metal records that immediately followed.  “Metal Life” was prototypical power metal, fitting the wave it was riding but also standing its ground and putting up a good fight against the likes of Helloween.  Indeed, Artch would likely have had a much better shot if they were from Germany as opposed to Norway (and via Iceland, in the case of vocalist Eirikur Hauksson), or if they were signed by Noise.  Nonetheless, “Metal Life” was an enjoyable headbanger that incorporated a fair amount of tempo changes during its running time and was resolutely metallic without resorting to the overplaying (and especially oversinging) that came to define power metal in subsequent years.
