Sebastian Münster, Munster's Famous Chart of Sea Monsters Hand colored map 1550
Sebastian Münster was the first guy ever to publish a separate map of each of the world's known continents in a 1544 book called "Cosmographia." During the Renaissance, people were scared of unknown, faraway lands due to the obvious excess of terrifying sea monsters populating the oceans. Münster took it upon himself to catalog derivations of the beasts (mostly taken from Olaus Magnus' 1539 "Carta Marina") and ended up creating one of the most sought after mythological curiosities of the 16th century.
