TMBS + Art
Don't mind me, just thinking about the Mysterious Benedict Society characters and how they draw. :)
KATE: Canonically a fantastic artist. She's able to draw incredibly well incredibly quickly. I headcanon that it's in part due to her ability to tell distances perfectly; when drawing with something with a reference, she's able to do the mental math and create an exact scale so the ratios between real life and paper match. That said, I feel like Kate really only draws things she has seen in real life, because art she just makes up usually isn't as perfect; it makes Milligan a little sad. Kate used to create some pretty elaborate worlds when she was a kid and giving her some colours and paper was one of the few things that would keep her in one spot for more than a minute.
REYNIE: Reynie is a canonically decent artist. In my head, however, it's one of the things that pokes towards his true age where his words and emotional maturity won't. He's by no means bad at it. I mean, he was able to draw in the books. But the perspective and proportions are going to look a little weird, or the shading won't make complete sense. His handwriting is the same way; Miss Perumal has graded a lot of college level essays that have the penmanship of a fifth grader. She finds it very cute.
STICKY: A canonically awful artist, at least as a kid. I think it's one of those things that really frustrates him for a long while because he has a perfect mental picture of whatever he is trying to put down on paper, and a complete inability to get his pencil to do it. Add on his anxiety over failure and perceived failure, and it's something he puts off from tackling for a very long time. However, I have a headcanon that he eventually takes a class on Pointillism and how to draw anatomy because of his growing interest in the sciences and chemistry, and he eventually gets decent at it. It was interesting to take a class where he couldn't just read through the textbook in five minutes and ace the whole course.
CONSTANCE: Like Reynie, I feel like Constance's handwriting and drawing skills are huge indicators of her true age. However, once she gets a little older and gets a better grasp on her fine motor skills, I can totally see her getting into making capital 'A' Art. I feel like she'd take the time to illustrate her favourite poems, or otherwise create these really huge canvases with lots of colour. She's a really visual thinker, and she sees lots of patterns that other people might not see. I feel like she could fill a whole gallery with pieces depicting everyday patterns in abstract ways. I also feel like she'd get really into spraypainting in her teenage years, and have a lot of fun with graffiti. Sticky disapproves, but Kate is excitedly showing her how to use a grappling hook to get to all the best spots. There's a couple of years where Mr. Benedict's house is an explosion of colour from top to bottom and becomes a jarring outlier on an otherwise quiet little street.
NUMBER TWO: Number Two knows how to draw out patterns for sewing and blueprints for engineering, and it's all she really needs to be content. She is also one of those people who can draw perfect circles and such on the first try, and Rhonda went through a phase of trying to get her to apply to art courses. She staunchly refused because the things she enjoys best are useful and practical, and art for art's sake simply doesn't fit into that category for her.
RHONDA: Rhonda enjoys doing the occasional sketch and such, but the medium she likes the most is usually oil paints. She loves impasto, the way that the thick layers of paint give an artpiece such texture and liveliness. One of the first things she does when Mr. Curtain is defeated and she finally has time and energy to spare for the more trivial facets of life and takes a course on it. It's actually how she meets her husband to be. She and Constance will also sit and do art together a lot; it's one of the ways that they bonded.
MISS PERUMAL: Miss Perumal doesn't consider herself much of an artist, but she's actually quite good. One of her favourite activities growing up was to perch herself in a park and draw the birds she could see. For one of her birthdays, Reynie bought her a bird identification field guide, and one of their new favourite activities to do together was to drive out somewhere and take long walks birding.
MILLIGAN: Drawing was another thing that Milligan had to rediscover for himself once his memories returned. I feel like he's one of those dads who draws silly little comics and sticks it into his kid's lunchbox. When Kate gets older and starts travelling again, they communicate a lot via letters. He usually includes hasty little sketches of the farm animals and funny interactions he's seen recently.
MR. BENEDICT: In my head, I feel like Mr. Benedict isn't much of an artist. It surprises him when he finds out that his twin is actually quite good at it, at least in terms of scientific diagrams, because in so many other ways they are very similar. However, he has a huge collection of art that has been gifted to him, and he hangs it very lovingly on his walls. He loves spending time with people making art, too; he and Violet spent many long afternoons together, him reading and her painting, occasionally chatting but mostly just getting to spend time together in amicable silence. When he grows up and his daughters show interest in the visual arts, he has a wonderful time getting to relive those nostalgic childhood days with them.
SQ: I feel like SQ was a doodler in the margins of his notebooks as a kid, and got scolded enough times that he grew out of it. I also feel, though, that as he started healing and gaining back his independence- and memories- he started drawing again and it became very cathartic. Art as a means of self expression could be very healing in part because he could just put to page how he feels without having to worry about mixing up his words or saying things the wrong way. He's very private about his sketchbooks for a very long time, and learning how to say 'No' when people asked to see what he was drawing was healing, too.
I kinda forgot about having a tumblr acc, my bad LOL if there's any1 that put their OCs in my asks for 'em to be drawn I will get to that, promise! For now, have an icon (I made!!!) of a freebie I recieved on Toyhouse today! I named them Ominous ;3
the way she sings honey, that cadence and off kilter rhythm is just sooooo nice. the way the lyrics and the melody are almost chasing each other, circling each other just not quite on beat, missing each other by one count. but then they resolve at the last line on the final beat, finally matching up with that last percussive hit. so satisfying. i love the way she plays with shifting lyrical pacing along the melody like that, has done it for several songs now. easy to get wrong and not as common in pop songs, but it flows so smoothly and deliciously, especially on a song about how she feels she never got it quite right until now. obsessed how she always finds ways to make the music itself evocative of potent emotions sometimes more than the lyrics.
「天使」 “Angel”
About the art…
i wanted to add some realism to six since shes always on the run, going through vents and other dangerous areas. shes bound to have injury at some point, right?
shes a quick thinker, i feel like she would be a good in first aid.
the wings are meant to represent her humanity despite everything shes been through.
shes a bright and strong child, doing her best to survive in a cruel world.
