The renowned 78th Highlanders Regiment of Foot were stationed at Halifax for almost three years (1869-1871). The regiment arrived in Halifax on the afternoon of May 14, 1869, aboard the troopship HMS Crocodile.
A total of 765 men disembarked in full dress uniform. The Regiment was divided into two depots and eight service companies, consisting in all of 34 officers, 49 sergeants, 21 drummers, 6 pipers, and 600 rank and file.
In The Manager’s office, the radio was playing as normal, tunes drifting over the room as they worked. Pen scribbling on paper accented the gentle notes and soft voice of the singer. Every so often, footsteps would race past their door and often that came with bouts of laughter as their kids seemed to be playing tag.
After a moment, the radio began buzzing. It was subtle at first, a glitch that could be brushed off as their imagination. Then it happened again, this time more consistently holding the janky frequency. The knobs shifted a minuscule amount, as if looking to tune into a specific station.
The adjusting continued with the static changing with it, until a voice that wasn’t quite clear of buzzing could be made out.
