The Coif, is a chainmail hood often used in conjunction with the Hauberk/Haubergon (A haubergon is a shorter version of the Hauberk, literally means “little hauberk.” 

The “Hauberk,” or Chainmail, is an armored shirt that often went over one’s body, to cover them from neck to mid thigh, used in conjunction with other pieces of armor. They were most effective against slashing attacks, as the links of mail could tend to deflect the axes and swords. Swords of the day, mind you, didn’t have the super awesome stabby tips that you’re probably used to, so thrusting with them wasn’t nearly as effective as, say, a spear being thrusted. Keep in mind, most people wearing hauberks had a shield, and a rather utilitarian helmet!
