     from the way he answered the door, slack––––jawed with messy hair, he clearly hadn’t been expecting him. prompto spent a few TOO MANY moments studying his friend, as if trying to determine whether he thought that he was real or not? clearly, he’d determined he was, because he continued.

     ❝ thought we were meeting at your place later? ❞

     clearly, plans had changed. still, prompto hesitated. the house he shared with his parents was pretty average. it was no upscale apartment–––– & definitely no citadel–––– but, he couldn’t very well leave his best friend outside. he shifted so he wasn’t blocking the door, waving a hand to gesture him in & hoping none of his COMPLICATED feelings showed on his face.

     ❝ come on in! mi casa es su casa! ❞ 

     he was unusually nervous. he felt like the same kid who had stumbled over himself trying to get the ATTENTION of the prince. even knowing that noctis wasn’t the judgy type, he wished he had done something to fix the place up.

     ❝ wanna help me raid the pantry? we’ve got plenty of snacks, & i would’t be a good host if i let my guest go hungry. ❞

     he took a few steps towards the kitchen, suddenly PAUSING & turning on his heel.

FINGERS  GRASP  THE  YOUNG  KING’S  BICEP ,   and he bodily  pulls him from the grass whereupon he laid :   relief wrenches the cold fingers of doubt from around his heart and throat ,   having believed his charge dead where he fell .   noctis’ words bring forth a sigh ,   one with gusto ,   expelling all air in his lungs in a loud outburst of exasperation .

       “ damn  right  you  won’t ! ”   he yells ,   and the hand upon his bicep moves to his shoulder ,   with which he rocks the king nearly off his feet again .   “ what  would  i  tell  iris ? ”   a joke ,   mostly ,   except when it isn’t :   he’d kick noctis’ ass  for making his little sister sad !   but beneath the words ,   a truer sentiment :   where he once could easily ,   happily imagine his life without the young king   ( merely prince at the time )   now .  .  .   is a completely different story . 

       he may not know where their journey will take them ,   back and forth across the continents ,   but he will be there every step of the way ,   should noctis allow .   should noctis survive ,   if he  does his damn job as the king’s shield .   he swallows remnants of the previous doubt and shakes his head .

     Oh child, whilst fate may be cruel & harrowing from whence it loomed, the Carbuncle was not. The small creature of dreams & divinity all but beaming up at their companion - their charge, for who they had sworn to protect. Their friend, who he would ever be, above all else. Above what the gods may dictate, & ask of thee when the time was nigh.

     ( Don't tell me you doubt me. Say it ain't so! ) The words, little more than a tease from a playful soul. No offense held, or meant, as the fox nuzzled Noctis’ hand. Irises of warm amber peering 'pon the child that was cared for so.

     A child Asa wished they could do so much more for, & protect from the hardships that would one day come to pass. To take the burden, no matter how impossible a task it be.

HIS  LAUGH  IS  GENUINE ,   a joyous sound ,   louder than the diner’s idle chatter and clinking utensils ;   he eyes the prince from across the small table and shrugs one shoulder .
