The British World: #tudorbritain 1485-1603 - Elizabeth I 1) Panels behind #elizabethi on George Gower’s #armadaportrait (ca 1588) show the defeat and destruction of the #spanisharmada on Britain’s rocky coast. The queen’s fingers, resting on a globe, point to the Americas as a sign of England’s colonial ambition and her mastery of the seas. 2) The #elizabethanera saw a flowering of literary talent. Here #shakespeare and fellow writers are portrayed at the #mermaidtavern .
