Marty welcomes the stranger first, as he always does, with his cowboy smile and attitude, setting the stage for Rust to follow suit. Still, the younger man is barely distracted from the task at hand to do the same, the first dossier of five recently given to him hogging all of his attention.

He still raises his hand in greeting, which is more than some people get in a lifetime.

«You'll have to forgive my partner—he's one of God's special little people.»

They're watching the children running on the snow-smeared sidewalk, their parents trailing behind them, dragging bags of gifts, illuminated by Christmas lights strung on the porches of residential homes.

When Jonathan speaks, heat leaves his mouth in a smoky mist, and Rust stares at it as it vanishes into thin air.

"It's not for everyone."

Indeed, neither of them fits the bill, but when he hears the children laugh, he remembers the time he did.
