One of my most loved tracks of the LP even if it’s just an interlude.
Meanwhile, the second pre-release single from the new Liturgy album follows a somewhat predictable arc--if the first single was their way of announcing that they'd made a strong break with their previous work, this one is a demonstration of what they've decided to keep. Greg Fox's "burst beat" drum attack is all over this song, as are the high, tremolo-picked melodic black metal riffs we all remember from Aesthethica. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix seems to have been serious about dropping his screams entirely, in favor of the "chant" vocal style he broke out at times on the first two Liturgy albums. But other than that, it seems like most of the changes that have occurred here are on the production side rather than in the songwriting. It takes a bit of getting used to, but this is the same band.
I have to wonder if, in the context of the full album, "Quetzalcoatl" was more of a provocative feint than a true indication of what to expect. If "Reign Array" is a more typical example of what Ark Work has in store, this album just might be a grower for me. I can tell you one thing after hearing this song once--the bagpipe-laced breakdown that shows up about 2/3 of the way through, which seems like it should be ridiculous, is just awesome and heavy as fuck. I think I'm gonna play this again.
