I'm kinda working on the theory that her mother's angel actually has angelic powers and that her father (an angel...because I refuse to give up my Tessa is half angel theory) gave it to her mother to protect her and that's why it now protects Tessa. We know that demon energies can be present in things, so why can't angel energy? It just seems to make sense to me.
