What is the job of an Architect?
If answered in a simple way, an Architect is a professional whose job is to prepare the plan and design of your property; be it a residential piece of land, a flat in an apartment building or any commercial property, before its construction begins keeping in mind his client’s requirement, the surrounding where the property will be built, the rules and regulation given by the local development authority and share necessary documents with the people involved in it, such as, construction contractor, structural engineer and others.
The answer given above is true but it is just an outline and to fully answer this question, we’ll have to take a deeper dive.
Understanding the needs and requirements of the client is the foremost important thing for any architect before they start the work. Meeting with his client and getting to know his taste and preferences, allowing his client to share his ideas for his property, basically the architect here wants to know what his client actually needs. After knowing all this, the Architect will prepare a draft plan which is not exactly a rough plan but it is a plan where the architect would like to know if he and his client are on the same page. The plan and design of the architect gets finalised here and the next step begins.
One thing to understand here is that you may require some changes from your architect which you might not be aware of but they could actually turn out to be completely illogical. Now at this point, if you have a good architect, they’ll explain the logic and the facts to you and not let those changes get implemented no matter how dearly you wanted them to get changed.
Architects may provide all the services that are required for building a residential project often termed as Turnkey Project. Here the architect not only prepares the design and plan but also implements them. It's his job to get the construction work done and after the construction work is completed the architect will work as an Interior Designer as well and furnish the entire house. In short, the architect will make the home ready to move in.
Commercial, Government or other similar types of properties can be huge and too complicated for any architect to completely develop and deliver from scratch.
Below are the services provided by the architects all over.
1. Site evaluation, analysis and development, like soil study.
Structural design drawings.
2. Sanitary, plumbing, drainage, water supply and sewerage design drawings.
3. Electrical and electronic systems design drawings.
4. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning design (HVAC) and other mechanical systems drawing.
5. Elevators, escalators, etc. drawings.
6. Fire detection, Fire protection and Security systems drawings.
Periodic inspection, site visits and evaluation of Construction works.
