Rain, heavy enough to wash sheets across the sidewalks and run in the gutters downhill, was still falling when he got in his car.
Fucking freak Los Angeles night storms.
He'd stood on the sidewalk, trying to tuck himself under the awning of the buildings for a whole twenty minutes and looking like a lunatic before giving it up and running for his car. He flipped on the windshield wipers when he saw a couple of workers emerge from a side door, box in one hand and a ladder in the other, paying no mind to the downpour.
Through the heavy curtain of rain, blurring the neon light marquees of Hollywood Boulevard, he watched them add every letter, and some part of him that had been left unembittered by the business glowed with pride... for himself, but mostly for Justine.

O.O I think @copperbadge gave me fanfiction writing advice about 15 years ago when I started writing Discworld fanfiction... The first time I showed my writing to anyone ever anywhere. The Internet is a surprisingly small place (and thank you - by the way - I'm still writing and I still value the advice I've been given by all of the people who responded critically to my work).
i respect staying humble but dang âIâm still writingâ is underselling yourself, b. youâre top-tier, my dude
(and nothing so direct but i do partially credit Copperbadge for my ethos of âtake your dumb comedy fics seriously and donât be so grim with the serious ficsâ. thanks dude)
So honoured to be tagged by @archaeologue in this. Thank you! Last movie you watched: Wonder Woman. WOMAN FULL OF WONDER. That power. Them muscles. THOSE PUNCHES. Last song you listened to: I never know what the songs are called. They play, and I listen. â¨Last show you watched: Bellevue. I'm still going through my latest Anna Paquin phase. â¨Last book you read: Oh lololol do textbooks count because to echo Archaeologue...it's all fanfiction. â¨Last thing you ate: bits of chicken i found lying on the kitchen counter. It was cooked, but I'm not sure how long ago. â¨When would you time travel to?: I'm nostalging for the 90s so badly at the moment. â¨First thing youâd do with lottery money: Pay outstanding fees. So boring, right. Because adult-ing is boring. And expensive. â¨Character you would hang out with for a day: old man Logan, because he needs a hug and I'm more than happy to oblige and we'll figure out a way to time travel back and fix things so he gets his x-men family back and they can all grow old together, and somehow Laura also exists in this timeline and it's all sunshine and family as opposed to whatever the heck happened in the lead up to that movie. The angst, it still agues me. â¨Tagging @droutlawqueen.

Taylor Swiftâs Cardigan reminded me of them as soon as I heard it! Though a handful of other Taylor songs fit them as well, in my head, so for whatever reason thereâs a lot of overlap there for me.
But I knew you
Dancin' in your Levi's
Drunk under a streetlight, I
I knew you
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better
To kiss in cars and downtown bars
Was all we needed
You drew stars around my scars
But now I'm bleedin'
'Cause I knew you
Steppin' on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain, I
I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy
ooh okay. i wrote some of a 5 times fic that i really liked, without connecting all the pieces, so this is a long excerpt set after s3:Â
Ruthâs flight to Denver gave her time to calm down from the rollercoaster of emotions that was Debbieâs offer. It was almostâbut not quiteâenough time to let go of Debbieâs face, too, that bewildered and hurt expression as Ruth left her standing there.
That one mightâve been easier to let go of if she couldnât still see Sam on the streets of Los Angeles, bewildered. Hurt.
She was really ending her year on a very specific note, Ruth thought. A pattern. A lousy one.
Her layover in Denver was scheduled to last almost an hour. Even after crossing the terminal to get to her departure gate, Ruth had more than thirty minutes until boarding.
She sat along the far wall of the gate, the florescent hum of the lights and buzz of Christmas travelers swirling around her, and reached for her pen. No time like the present to try and figure out what she wanted.
Debbie wanted her to direct, and she knew that wasnât for her. So what do you want, Ruth? She asked herself, pen tapping against paper. What is it?
The question sounded more like Sam than her own inner voice, which only served to annoy her. Wasnât he in her head enough?
âRuth.â
Oh, great. Now she really was hearing him. Could stress lead to hallucinations? Because she hadnât thought she was quite that freaked out.
âRuth?â
Fuck.
She felt him in front of her before she looked up. He cast a long shadow.
âSam?â
âHey.â
âWhat are you doing here?â
âItâs nice to see you, too.â
âThis isâweâre in Denver,â she continued, wide eyes fixed on him.
âYeah, no shit. I know where we are.â
âAre you scouting for a location?â Her brow furrowed. âIs Justine with you?â
âNo. And no. Uh, Sheila called me.â
âReally.â
âYes. She said to tell you, âyou can keep the socks.â Iâm guessing youâll know what that means, because I donât have a fucking clue. But itâs Sheila, so Iâm pretty used to that.â
The socks sheâd gotten in the gift exchange were cute, with little reindeer on them. Sheâd thanked Sheila at the time, and promised to wear them in Omaha. Now she understood her friendâs slight smile, the way sheâd nodded and held her tongue.
Merry Christmas to you too, she sent towards Baltimore, then squared her shoulders to stare Sam down.
âOkay, so Sheila told you where to find me. That doesnât explain why you came.â
âTo see you. To talk.â
âWe tried that in L.A. I think we said enough. And my flight will be boarding soon.â
âYouâve got more than twenty minutes! What else are you gonna do, find pen pals?â
âMean,â Ruth shot back halfheartedly. She hated even admitting it to herself, but she had been missing him already.
âI bought a fucking plane ticket to come find you,â Sam said, softer. âIf you donât want to talk to me, then donât talk. Listen. Okay? Would you-would you just listen?â
âFine.â
She patted the empty seat next to her, watching with amusement as Sam tried to settle comfortably into a chair that was uncomfortable by design.
âIâm not trying to spring anything on you. Or chase you, or anything. I didnât want to say this over the phone.â
âWhat could you possibly have to say, what else?â Ruth was working herself up for round two, he could see it like a gathering cloud, and they didnât have time for that today. âYou already told me you loved me, completely out of nowhere, and then you told me you wanted to try, and then youââ
âI had a heart attack.â
âWhat?â
That stopped her mid-argument. He watched her backpedal and try to catch up.
âSamâyou what? You had a heart attack? When? Why didnât youâŚâ
Ruth let go of the rest of her question, not sure she actually wanted to know the answer. Why would he have told her? They hadnât even spoken, since.
âYeah.â Sam nodded, as though sheâd said something else. âI, uh, I didnât tell Justine either, so if you could keep that to yourself for now, Iâd appreciate it. Iâm going to tell her, eventually, but itâs her first movie, and it means so much to her.â
âSam.â Ruthâs voice twisted. He knew that tone; it meant tears were up next.
âJesus. Please donât start that, okay? I didnât tell you for dramatic effect.â
âWhy did you tell me?â
âI meant what I said, before, about wanting to be honest with you. I meant that.â
âOkayâŚâ
âSo, I told you about the movie because I didnât want you to think Iâd used the part as a, as some kind of trick to get you to L.A. Just because I missed you. I did miss you, and I did want you there, but I never wouldâve lied to you for that.â
âIt doesnât matter, Sam. Itâs fine. Iâm going home for Christmas, and Iâm going to use the break to figure out what I want to do next. Itâs fine. Itâs over.â
âItâs not fine! Nothing about this is fine, Ruth. What the fuck. I left you standing on the street thinking Iâm, I donât know, one of those creeps who pushes too hard or lies to get you into bed, and I donât want you thinking that. Go home to Omaha, move on with your life, whatever, but I couldnât leave it like that. Not with you remembering me as some old asshole who broke your heart.â
The corner of her mouth twitched, but the tears held back from spilling, just barely. âYouâre not old.â
âSure. Right. Just an asshole, then.â
âYeah.â She smiled, a peace offering. âAnd you didnât break my heart.â
âHm.â
âBruised it, maybe. A bit.â
âOh, is that all.â
âYeah. Iâm the one whoâs good at that,â she admitted, staring out at the terminal instead of at him. âI break my own heart. Chasing parts, chasing men, chasingâŚsomething, I donât even know what except I know I havenât found it yet.â
Now she looked back at him, blue eyes blazing. âDebbie offered me a job, directing. Running a show. On a new network.â
âHoly shit.â
âI turned her down.â
He let out a slow breath. âOf course you did.â
âShe was so madâŚbut itâs not what I want.â
âYouâd be good at it.â
âYeah, and maybe Iâd be good at teaching English, or pole dancing, but that doesnât make it my dream.â
âPole dancing.â
âIâve never tried it. I could be good.â
âSure.â His smile was fond, just short of patronizing. She frowned and shifted to better hold his gaze.
âI canât believe you almost died and you didnât tell anybody.â
âI told you.â
âNot good enough. Who was with you in the hospital? Iâm assuming you were in a hospital? Not just guessing about the whole heart attack thing?â
âYeah, yeah, I was in a hospital. Nurses were with me. It was fine, I got myself home, I agreed to direct Justineâs movie, I came here. No problems.â
âWait.â
Shit.
âThis happened before you signed on as director? Sam. This happened before I was in L.A?â
send me a đ and iâll post a snippet of art/writing that i never got around to finishing this year

Iâve been genuinely tempted to make a Savage Garden Sam X Ruth vid but it felt too random to mash up with such a 90s/early00s vibe. Until now⌠MaybeâŚ
that would be cool! i think âi want youâ or âvioletâ would work for them, but honestly quite a few savage garden songs could
