Conrad claims the VSGs as an arbitrary waveform generators. I know these e-shops are little bit sketchy when it comes to measuring instrumentation, which is something that I tend to tolerate, but till certain level only. This is absolutely ridiculous.
I am constantly searching for an arbitrary waveform generator. I don’t want to pay too much for a device, that I use maybe eight times a year, so I am looking for a cheap one, which is a real pain in my ass. These devices are a little bit costly, but for no reason, modern AWG is a CPU with fast D/A and amplifier, nothing fancy, I don’t know why this should cost so much, but it costs and I can’t change it. This is why I am searching through e-shops like conrad. Despite this cost cutting achievment, my attention was caught by a “arbitrary waveform generator” that goes up to 2.1GHz and, of course, costs a fortune. How the fucking hell they made this? Just imagine rectangular shaped waveform at 2GHz. This is not impossible to generate, but the significant harmonics of this signal goes somewhere above 20GHz, which is, in fact, a lot. I was a little bit curious about that device, because if it is real AWG up to 2.1GHz (which is something I’ve never seen), then just shut up and take my money. That thing would be realy cheap for 6k€. But, there are no wonders, even on christmass. In fact, that device is not an arbitrary waveform generator, but a vector signal generator. Arbitrary waveform generator can generate almost anything repetitive. They work in a baseband. On the other hand. Vector signal generators are much more like RF generators combined with a highly versatile modulators, that can modulate almost anything, but the key feature is that they are modulating some carrier, so they doesn’t work in a baseband.That’s the key difference.
But wait. How the typical VSG looks like? It is some harmonic signal generator splitted into two paths, followed by 90° phase shifter in one path to generate two 90° phase shifted carriers. These two paths goes directly to two mixers and then they are added togehter to form the output signal. This is how the VSGs works. The magic happens in that two mixers, which are fed by, in fact, two arbitrary waveform generators synchronized in phase, that have to go up to maximal symbolrate of the generated signal. If you are doing AM/ASK, then just put the modulating signal into I (or Q) and the other channel leave silent. If you are doing some QAM or n-PSK, then just put your stairy shaped multilevel thing into I and Q channels synchronized on their transitions, etc. So if you think about it, then all that fancy VSG software only feeds two synchronized D/As, which is exactly the same situation as with modern AWG. Nothing more than D/A fed by some fancy software and analog frontend of course. So if you add some analog frontend into a VSG adding the possibility to switch the D/A’s ouputs directly to this, you get, with a lot of software work of course, two independent AWGs. So it should be easy to combine AWG with VSG into one box.
No, this is not that case, in fact, I’ve never seen combination of AWG with VSG and there are a lot of good reasons not to do this. But what they did is something a little bit different. They’ve added a LF output to the VSG, where it is possible to output sine or square up to 200kHz. That’s all. I belive this feature could become handy, but this is definitely not an AWG, that device is VSG with some small addition. But this small addition caused it is included inside the AWG list of that poor e-shop, which is completely insane.
I hope you’ve learned the difference between the the Arbitrary Waveform Generators and Vector Signal Generators, because they are different devices used for different purposes.
