The moments where he allows you to love him are few. Most of the time, he doesn’t believe he deserves it. His illness stands in the way of most employment opportunities, the bad days he endures stealing away the visibility of each beautiful step of progress he has made – each step that you have watched patiently since you met him.

Your history with your illness is your own. It does not match his, but the pain you experienced fighting the numbness, the loneliness, the crushing apathy that stole away your entire life in one fell swoop – it made you patient. It made you realize that not everything has a simple answer in the time it is questioned. It made you realize that sometimes it is impossible to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, and it is even more difficult when the functions of the brain obscure any logical way of thinking.

It made you want to stay when everyone else wanted to leave him.

When you found him shaking on the floor of the running shower, fully clothed, you sat next to him in the silence. When he yelled about how much he hated who he was, you listened. When neither of you could afford a therapist, nor his medication, you cried together.

When he cannot see the outcome, you see it for him.

On good days like these, you can love him the way he deserves to be loved. With kisses and caresses, with appreciation and attention. On the good days, he finds something to laugh about, and you laugh with him. On his best days, you make each other laugh with silliness beneath the sheets, with your skin touching and his fingers tangled in your hair.

“Your eyes are an ocean,” he says with a lisp one morning on one of his best days. His forehead is pressed against yours so you can see his beautiful eyes. “Your breasts are also an ocean, lol.”
