This was going to be the jackpot, if one could coin a phrase centuries early for completely different reasons. With an already disgruntled crew having put up with far too many fiascos regarding treasure, Jack needed this heading to be fruitful.
âPleasepleasepleaseplease,â he had whispered under his breath in the privacy of his cabin, clutching his compass in the manner of one wanting both to hug it and to throttle it. It wasnât that the thing wasnât working so much as its idea of âtreasureâ didnât want to settle and he strongly suspected it was to do with how fragmented his mind had become since returning from the dead.

Striding on along the path his compass led, the captain found his gaze drawn to the distant figure of a man. Too distant for him to yet take in the sheer size of him. By his skin tone he didnât look to be native.
âOi!â he cried, offering a salute in favour of implying any violent intent. âYou! Speak English? Parlez-vous Français?â
