Chapel for the Holy See by Eduardo Souto de Moura; the Pritzker Prize–winning Portuguese architect was awarded the Golden Lion for best participant. The Vatican’s first participation in the @labiennale was a surprise favorite for almost everyone who saw it during the preview. Removed from the bustling main venues, on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, home to a great Palladio church, the Vatican invited 11 teams to design small chapels in a quiet, leafy park. It was refreshing to see actual architecture and (mostly) well-detailed construction, integrated into nature to create serene spaces for contemplation. It’s a uniquely American irony that the template for early 20th century residential opulence was shaped largely by an undereducated immigrant—an Italian, at that—who arrived in America with a minimal grasp of English. By the standards of his time (and, depressingly, those of today), Rosario Candela would not be considered desirable. Born in Palermo in 1890, he emigrated to the U.S. around 1910. His unflagging drive, industriousness, and sheer talent allowed Candela to graduate from Columbia University’s architecture school in 1915, start his own firm five years later, and reshape urban living by creating some of the country’s most coveted real estate: Fifth Avenue maisonettes overlooking Central Park, elegant duplexes and triplexes in cooperative buildings on Park Avenue, some of the first apartment complexes on Sutton Place. "Elegance in the Sky: The Architecture of Rosario Candela" is a compact one-room exhibit at @museumofcityny, curated by Donald Albrecht and designed by @peterpennoyerarchitects, that takes viewers inside a handful of those residences. @uspavilion18 announces seven “Dimensions of Citizenship” projects for the 16th Architecture @labiennale. The architecture and design teams behind each of the projects will consider citizenship at different scales. “We all occupy different, overlapping categories of space at the same time, from the level of the neighborhood, to the nation, to the planet as a whole,” said the curators in a statement. “The installations make it clear that the stakes of citizenship will be exceedingly high in the years to come.” Read the full #AR_Exhibition story at http://ow.ly/omOI30iTKE7 and watch our story to see the selected teams.
