On the subject of Gaster, I'm 99% sure they found him through either datamining and the figuring out how to trigger the related events, or by editing Fun values, since those are what cause his room and his "followers" to appear (1/2)
Though I think Entry 17 and some other stuff are only accessible through hacking in room numbers for now, and now that I think about it I think that's how Gaster's room was first discovered, but I could be remembering wrong (2/2)
Oooh, I see. I was vaguely aware of what it takes to find him, but I didn’t know any of the specifics. It’s just pretty amazing to me that people were able to discover that stuff at all - like, who thought “hmm, that ‘fun’ is not capitalized, I wonder what happens if I capitalize it and mess with the values?’. This whole ‘I love this game so I’m going to CRACK IT OPEN AND FIND OUT ITS SECRETS FROM READING ITS INNARDS’ mentality is great and amazing :D
