Swimmers in Billy Roseâs "Aquacade" at the Marine Amphitheater at the World's Fair, June 10, 1939. The Aquacade was a music, dance, and swimming show presented in an 11,000 seat amphitheater. The pool and the 300 by 200-foot stage could be hidden behind a lighted 40 foot-high curtain of water. Johnny Weissmuller and a pre-Hollywood Esther Williams were among the performers. I have a 10-DVD set of documentary footage of the fair and when I got to the Aquacade, it blew my mind. Even more amazing in color. Basically this was a huge performance venue which included a WATER stage as well as a large dance/skating stage. They performed what were essentially LIVE versions of Busby Berkely dance routines and Esther Williams movies. So, big synchronized swimming affair set to music, people skating in formation on stage, etc. There were elaborate costumes and of course lots of bathing beauties, like:

I was introduced to synchronized swimming when 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Tracy Ruiz-Conforto came to the Gardens to perform in the new Aquacade show. Skiers, swimmers, divers, snow flyers, skaters, athletes all, were amazed at her athletic ability â started her routine swimming hard underwater for more than a minute. â Have to admit, I felt a kinship with the synchro swimmers, after all, I was an expert at treading water (you know, waiting for the boat to come back after falls).
