I’m back after rereading gc as promised! just as excellent as the first time, I don’t think you’ve ever written anything I haven’t liked 🥰 if you’re ever willing to poke around in Nick’s POV some more, I’d be DYING to know what he was thinking about that day in goodale park 🥺
awh man tysm! that's so sweet.
as for the goodale park scene, I can't write it out for you, but essentially, my headcanon about nick is that he's a doer, an Activities Guy, and quality time is a big thing for him. So he really just wanted to get to know his new home a little AND spend some time with kent. Was he consciously trying to make it a date? no. but he's not unhappy if the vibes swing that way. he's also downplaying the hocking hills cabin stuff bc yes he did look it up on the plane and yes he did indulge in a little daydream about kent letting him drag her there for bye week and a little romantic vacation but also it genuinely looks beautiful. and jeni's ice cream! he just wants kent to have a nice time and feel relaxed, and he knows she's most likely to let him take care of her if she's unwound a little. and she does! lets him kiss her out on the street! nick's fucking thrilled about it. in this scene nick's not pushing for anything imo he's just trying to have a nice afternoon, and it's kent who's like 'oh no he makes me happy' about it.

Any thoughts on Owen’s reaction to Kent and Nick and how it changes over the years? I love your writing and your stories always strike such a good balance!!
Putting this under the cut bc it got stupid long:
Hmm I think what I was trying to explore with Owen and Kent in Good Company was a relationship built on friendship but also convenience and like....expectation? almost? and how sometimes the blurred boundaries between friendship and a relationship mean you don’t know where you stand with each other. I had a line from Kent that was like ‘you can’t make a relationship out of an assumption’ --- like just because you’re friends and have hooked up and care about each other and everyone expects you to, doesn’t mean that you should. For my versions of Owen and Kent it’s the fact that they don’t communicate and try and define some of this stuff and move their relationship purposefully to the next level that’s the trouble.
BUT they are, at the center of that, genuinely very good friends. Similar! (Maybe too similar?) Owen tells Kent he loves her because he does! but also because he feels like he should, that’s what is expected of him, and because he likes the idea and ease of sticking with and making it work with Kent and hasn’t worked out the difference yet. Which is why Kent, who HAS realized that difference is the first to move away and move on. I think when Owen finds out about Nick and Kent he’s shocked not necessarily because it’s Nick (although that’s certainly part of it) but because he’s taken Kent for granted up till that point. I think it takes him a while to get used to it, because in a period of massive change in all their lives, Kent was someone he was trying to use as a constant, even subconsciously, and now he’s having to readjust everything there, too.
I think once he gets over that, gets more comfortable in Buffalo, sees how happy Nick and Kent are, and has the opportunity to talk to Kent a little more candidly about it (tipsy, in a bar back in canada over the offseason) he apologizes for the way they went about stuff and how much space he needed. But Kent gets it, and recognizes that the reason they didn’t work out in college was on her, too. She didn’t push enough, and maybe that was a sign. Conversation is excruciatingly awkward, but necessary! and they get through it!
After that, with everything out in the open, I think it’s pretty easy for Owen and Kent to go back to their earlier friendship. It’s almost a relief to not feel like he needs anything more out of it? To not feel that pressure? I think he could probably still get a little awkward about Nick and Kent because there’s always going to be history there, but mostly they get on very well and meet up regularly etc. Would love to think Owen meets someone in Buffalo and they have their little double dates and the poor girl has to deal with Nick, Kent and Owen talking in inside jokes all evening.
if you want it - this is a lil prompt to talk about meta for a fic verse that no one’s asked you about before
ahhhh thank you this is so sweet, ty for indulging me!!
currently thinking about an addition to the good company/a pocket to put my heart in universe where nick takes kent home for the holidays for the first time and kent has a meltdown over all the attention she's getting and how much nick's family want to involve her in the family traditions, which are all Acts Of Commitment, like joint couple stuff. they have a big blow out argument after kent sneaks off to go hide in the bedroom and gets pissy when nick comes to find her because she's Overwhelmed. nick had such a perfect idea of how this christmas was going to go, and it wasn't this, with kent looking miserable and stressed in his childhood bedroom. I want both of them hissing at each other, trying not to wake the whole house, bc nick for once doesn't have the energy or patience to try and react maturely bc he's too disappointed and so instead they're just fighting and they never fight, not really. kent takes the car and leaves and nick has to borrow his brother's truck to chase after her--finds her in the target parking lot bc she forgot her phone and doesn't remember the way back to nick's house. nick has to talk her down and apologize for not preparing her enough, for not getting his family to back off. and kent has to sort through why it all makes her so nervous. and then they have sex in the guest bathroom about it bc the bedroom they're staying in is right next to nick's baby cousin and they haven't touched each other in days and they really really need to right now.
