5 Things To Double-Check Before Signing A Lease
So you think you found your dream apartment huh? But wait! Before you sign on the dotted line, be sure this really is the apartment you want. Here are 5 things you should double-check before signing a lease:
1) Location. Is the location of the apartment really where you want? Are you living close to places you want such as the grocery store, the gym, and coffee shops? Is there public transportation available nearby? Also, realize that while rent may be cheaper in the suburbs, it may impact your commute times.
2) Amenities. Make sure your apartment will offer the amenities you desire or expect. Which utilities are included? What kind of heating is there and is air conditioning available? Are there washing/drying machines that you can use in your building?
3) Landlord. How is your landlord? Establishing a good relationship is important. Can you go to him or her if something goes wrong with your apartment? Are there any special policies that he or she expects you to obey?
4) Neighbors. While you don't have to be best friends with your neighbors, who you live by may impact the satisfaction of your stay. Try to at least say "hi" to the people you will be living around for most likely the next year. It can help you feel safer and more at home.
5) Parking. Make sure you understand the parking situation. is there a garage or would you need to park on the streets? And if you do need to park on the street, will you be able to consistently find a spot and do you need to get a permit from the city? You don't want to be surprised with a parking ticket on your windshield!
