âYouâve never⌠Had a kiss before?â Nea was laughing. An amused, rude little chuckle completely at Dwightâs expense. The boy flushed, his cheeks a charming shade of pink as he averted his eyes to the dirt beneath his shoes and sunk in on himself.Â
It wasnât really that embarrassing. So what if he hadnât kissed anyone before? It didnât matter. Stood beside Nea, you gave her a little warning kick in the shin â not hard enough to really hurt, but enough for her to reel herself back a bit. âCâmon, itâs fine if he hasnât!â
The girl shrugged, a smirk still visible on her lips. âYeah, yeah, itâs fine,â she drawled, âbut come on!â She leaned forward on her knees, attempting to see over the hands that were now covering Dwightâs beet red face. âDonât you wanna?â She pressed, and the man let out an indecipherable mumble. Again, you jumped to his defence. âNea, just let the guy breathe. Heâs fine. He clearly doesnât want to-â
You werenât expecting that.
Nea was cackling now. Dwight folded in on himself in absolute terror at what heâd just exclaimed. Well⌠If he wanted to kiss someone, then⌠You guess that was fine. Actually- âDwight, if youâre giving into peer pressure thenââ
âN-No!â He dared look at you through a gap in his fingers. He could only maintain eye contact for a second before his nerves forced him to look away. âI-I⌠I-I want toâŚâ
Bless him. Youâd never seen him so embarrassed before. Fine. If he wanted to, then⌠You werenât going to stop him. Youâd defended him all you could. A foul taste settled in your mouth at the thought of someone else having his first kiss, but⌠This was out of your hands.Â
Nea playfully punched his shoulders. âIâm sure someone will help you out! Uh⌠I ainât gonna, so donât askâ But thereâs⌠Meg? Whereâs Meg? Whereâs-â
Another voice broke into the small group. Claudette, whom had been crouched off to the side, washing an old shirt in the lake. It was the main reason the four of them had even left the campfire. It wasnât safe to go alone. Claudette didnât even look at them, but she regarded them with a tired, matter-of-fact tone. âHe doesnât want to kiss Meg.â
How would she know? Not that it really mattered. Nea bristled, annoyed to have her idea shot down so quickly. âAlright, fine! Uh⌠Hey, I bet Kateâll take pity on ya!â
âNo,â Claudette responded again. This time, she looked up, her sodden over-shirt dripping as she wrung it out into the water. Her eyes flickered to you for a moment, âthe only one he wants to-â
âN-No, no!â Dwight cut in, frantically waving his hands. âH-Hey, now, thatâs uhâ! I donâtâ!â
Claudette wasnât having any of it. She turned back to her shirt and passively nodded in your vague direction. âDwight has a crush on [Y/N].âÂ
Dwight started gasping. Splutters of panic as he desperately tried to shut her up, despite the fact sheâd already said it. âH-Hey! N-No, Iâ! I-I justâ!â His face had gone an absolutely furious shade of red. You blinked at him. He looked at you. He went redder. He flung around to stomp his foot at Claudette, but he looked no more threatening than an angry toddler. âT-That wasâ I-I said that in confidence!â
There was an amused smile on Claudetteâs face. She simply shrugged, hummed, and kept scrubbing at the shirt.Â
Nea was absolutely besides herself. She was heaving, banging on her chest in an attempt to force the air into her lungs. âMy god- Thatâsâ Thatâs perfect! Hey, Hey, [Y/N], you gotta kiss him! Take pity on the poor guy!â
You blinked; confused and in disbelief. HeâŚ?? He hadâŚ? A crush?? On⌠On you? You trusted Claudetteâs word enough to know she wouldnât say something like that lightly. Had Dwight really said that to her?Â
Nea elbowed him in the gut. âGo on, Dwight! Donât you want your kiss?â
The man fumbled, spluttering in pure terror. âN-No!â His gaze snapped to her. âLook, s-she doesnât wanna- W-Whoâd wanna kiss me!?â
You found the piercing blue eyes of Nea on you. âYouâd kiss Dwight, right?â
Dwight flung himself around to stare at you with wild eyes. You werenât entirely sure what answer he wanted to hear. You swallowed nervously. You couldnât⌠Lie. âI-I mean⌠I-If he wants to, then⌠Yeah.â
He didnât say anything. His gaze flickered nervously between you and⌠Everywhere else. Nea was laughing. Claudette was smiling. You felt your face going redder by the second.Â
A few painfully long moments passed. Dwight looked like a deer in the headlights. He looked terrified. Fear bubbled in the pit of your stomach, but you knew that Nea and Claudette werenât going to help you out here.
You took a step forwards. Dwight inhaled a sharp breath of air through his nose. He wasnât backing away from you. This was fine, you told yourself. Another step. You were right in front of him now. He was forced to look at you, dark eyes flickering between your eyes and lips in a panic. You steeled yourself.
And then hurriedly lurched forward, pushing your lips to his.
You didnât dare stick around to truly think about the squeak that escaped him. Or how soft his lips were. Or how you felt the flutter of his pulse beneath your fingertips as your pressed your hands to his chest for leverage. Or the warmth that flooded your cheeks, or the way your heart pounded into your ribs.
As you hurried to rush through the treeline back to the campfire, you couldnât even bare to think of the sight of Dwight, stood there immobile, his face a vibrant red and his hands nervously clinging to his tie like a lifeline.
