How to clear the cache on the Galaxy S6

If you’re at all unfamiliar with how to clear the cache on the Galaxy S6, today we’ll walk you through the basics: what a cache wipe is, the different kinds of cache and how to wipe the cache. Whether you call it cache clearing, wiping the cache, clearing the system partition or cache wiping, we’ll show you how it’s done.

What is a cache wipe?

Good question. It depends on what cache you’re talking about: the app cache or the system cache. As you can probably tell, the app cache is for specific apps and the system cache is for the Android system itself. The cache is basically like the Temp folder on your PC – a bit of a dumping ground for temporary data. While caches make your Galaxy S6 faster, they can also get bogged down, hence needing to clear the Galaxy S6 cache on occasion.

How to wipe the app cache on the Galaxy S6

If you want to clear the app cache on the Galaxy S6 – whether for one app in particular or for all apps, you do this through the Settings menu. Go to Settings > App Manager and find the individual app of which you want to clear the cache. Remember it might be in the Downloaded, Running or All tab. Tap the entry and then tap Clear Cache. If you want to clear all app caches simultaneously, go to Settings > Storage and tap Cached Data > OK.

How to wipe the system cache on the Galaxy S6

If it’s your Android system that is acting weird and not just an app or two, you might want to clear the system cache, also known as wiping the cache partition. The most common time this is useful is straight after an Android update, when battery drain, glitches, crashes or other weirdness can occasionally affect your system.

1. Turn off your Galaxy S6.

2. Press and hold Power, Volume Up and the Home button.

 Press and hold Power, Volume Up and Home.

3. You’ll see a blue screen with the Android on it, then you’ll be taken to the recovery menu.

4. Use the volume buttons to scroll and highlight Wipe Cache Partition. Press Power to confirm.

 Select Wipe Cache Partition.

5. You’ll see a message in yellow at the bottom of the screen when the process is complete.

 You’ll get a ”wipe complete” message once it’s done.

6. Highlight Reboot System Now and press Power to confirm.

 Time to rebooot your Galaxy S6.

7. Your Galaxy S6 will reboot and recompile all of your apps. It might take a little while to re-cache them all, but once it is done you should have a Galaxy S6 running as smooth as can be.

No signal, no problem: EE's WiFi Calling service launches with the Galaxy S6 on 10 April

EE has revealed that its WiFi Calling service will launch on 10 April, debuting with the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Microsoft Lumia 640.

The service is aimed at customers who’ve got spotty cellular connections in their homes, suffering from poor call quality or even the inability to make calls and receive texts in certain areas of their house.

WiFi Calling eliminates that by allowing devices to make and receive calls as well as texts, using a Wi-Fi connection. It’s a welcome feature, but it does sadly mean that we might soon start hearing people nattering away on Underground platforms.

While other networks like Three also offer this service, they require separate apps. EE’s solution is built-in to the actual devices themselves, and WiFi Calling is automatically enabled the moment a Wi-Fi connection is established.

That means that users can use their devices exactly as they would normally – the same dialler, the same text app – without having to take any extra steps or open up another app.

We’ve been testing the service out for the past week, and it’s worked as advertised, letting us make calls in notorious dead spot rooms without any problems.

There’s no specific list of supported devices yet (and EE was unable to confirm iPhone support), but we do know that EE is planning to bring the service to more than 5 million customers by summer.

This Wednesday marked the opening day of F8, Facebook’s 2-day annual developer conference. Every year it sets the masterminds of the internet buzzing with announcements on the future of everyone’s favourite procrastination platform. Rest assured, the California-based social media giant did not disappoint.

From features for the everyman, to back-end development, er, developments, F8 delivered promises to keep Facebook at the forefront of social networking and cross-platform integration.

Embed away…

  We told you yesterday that Facebook is bringing 360-degree videos that’ll be embedded in your News Feed (which makes sense, seeing as Oculus is owned by Zuckerberg & Co.). But that’s not all.

Slightly less eye-popping though it may be, the announcement that Facebook videos will now be embeddable (with a single line of code) is an important one.

In the ongoing turf war between Facebook and YouTube (the former offering instant accessibility, the latter greater functionality), a move to allow users to externally embed those videos might see the ‘Book gaining ground with personal video shooters – it’s the platform most of them are already using, after all.

The reach of YouTube as a business platform seems pretty stable, though, equally, it’s unlikely Facebook will turn down the cash in favour of keeping embedded vids ad-free.

Spend to be App-y

  Far from shooting the Messenger, Facebook is opening up its chat app to third-party developers.

The Messenger Platform means developers will be at liberty to add new functionality – think doodles, more emojis, on-the-go photo editors, and the like.

Essentially this will introduce something of a micro-app store to the 600 million people who use the world of Facebook Messenger every day. It’s not going to change the world, but a few clever additions might just take the fight to WhatsApp, Kik, and their cross-platform brethren.

Having announced a week ago that it’ll be letting people use the app to send cash to their mates, Facebook now envisages much more important functionality such as, you know, GIFs.

David Marcus, chief of Facebook’s Messenger division, made his excitement clear: “I don’t know about you, but I find GIFs to be really awesome… They just make the world a little bit better.”

On top of this increased usability, Messenger is also set to be integrated with businesses. Online retailers, for example, will be given a direct channel for communicating with customers in real time – delivering confirmations, shipping notifications and the like over Messenger, in a single feed for a completely streamlined order process.

Though some users might feel discomfort at Facebook confirming users’ identities by matching profiles to orders, it would certainly revolutionise purchases, and represents the next step in introducing a real marketplace to the network – something Zuckerberg has been pushing for a while.

Freedom of speech

  On the subject of streamlining user experience, comments across web platforms will now appear in real-time.

How significant is this? Well, for one thing, it represents a further step in Facebook’s takeover of online interaction. It becomes much more logical for a site to implement and integrate with it than disparate comment and feedback platforms: for example, a conversation on a media site with Facebook integration would also appear on the network, live, unifying interaction and increasing buzz around a particular post.

The real benefit of this is not for users, though it will allow for discussion (and trolling) on a grander scale, but for publishers, who will gain a much greater engagement with the media they share, on a single platform.

Analytical App-eal

  More good news for developers: Facebook is releasing a free tool making it easy for app creators to understand how people are using their apps across platforms and devices, providing indications of the impact of marketing campagins.

This is the same tech Facebook itself uses to refine search processes and ad delivery – opening it up to third parties throws open the doors to app developers to increase functionality and engagement, no doubt with the hope that they’ll be enticed into purchasing ad units.

In combination with changes to LiveRail delivery, it seems clear that Facebook is driving harder than ever for developers to use it as their marketing platform.

Not to be confused with the new rail network across London LiveRail, announced last year, is an ad exchange system filling ad space within apps and sites with content from the highest bidder. The changes announced mean that mobile ads will be supported alongside video, and will be able to delve into a pool of anonymous Facebook data to determine the most appropriate ad to display.

Internet of Zuckerberg

  Parse? But I’m not thirsty…

No, not parched: Facebook has launched Parse, a set of software development kits for use in Internet of Things projects.

The subtle hope seems to be that Parse will become the standardised method of implementing such projects, as none exists at present.

What does this mean for the everyday user? Well, you might not see it, but Facebook code might soon be controlling much more than your social feed. Think lightbulbs, central heating, ovens…

How to enable motion controls on the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung likes to do things a little differently from other phone makers, and its Motions and Gestures are a good example of that. For many Samsung buyers, they’re major selling points that make Galaxy smartphones and phablets more useful than some of Samsung’s rivals’ offerings. As you might expect from the name, the Motions and Gestures features enable you to control your Galaxy Note 4 with – yes! – motion and gestures. Here’s how to enable motion controls on the Galaxy Note 4.

What Motions and Gestures are available?

There are four key Motions and Gestures on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. They are Direct Call, Smart Alert, Mute/Pause and Palm Swipe. Direct Call enables you to make a call by simply holding your Galaxy Note 4 up to your ear. Smart Alert vibrates when you pick your phone up to let you know you’ve missed a notification or notifications. Mute/Pause silences your phone when you cover the screen with your palm or flip your phone over, and Palm Swipe takes a screenshot of the current screen when you slide your palm from one vertical edge of the screen to the other.

There are also some additional options in the Galaxy Note 4’s accessibility settings. Air Wake Up enables you to wake your phone by waving your hand over it, and Single Tap Mode enables you to get rid of incoming calls, alarms and reminders with, you’ve guessed it, a single tap.

There are four Motions and Gestures to choose from.

How to enable Motions and Gestures on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Enabling motion controls on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 couldn’t be easier. To do it:

Open the notification panel by sliding it down from the top of the screen

Tap on Settings

Scroll, scroll, and scroll a bit more until you reach Motions and Gestures

You should now see the four Motions and Gestures listed, alongside their status: on or off. If the feature you want to use is currently disabled, you can enable it by tapping on it and then changing the slider to On.

The Mute/Pause option is pretty handy.

How to enable Air Wake Up and Single Tap Mode on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

For reasons only known to Samsung, Air Wake Up and Single Tap Mode aren’t in the Motions and Gestures bit of Settings: they’re in the Accessibility bit of the Personalization section. To enable or disable them:

Tap on Settings

Scroll to Personalization and tap on it

Tap on Accessibility

You’ll find the Air Wake Up and Single Tap Mode in the accessibility options, and again you can enable or disable them by tapping the slider.

Not all motion options are in the Motions section. That isn’t confusing at all.

How does Air Wake Up actually work?

It’s magic! Not really. There’s a proximity sensor that’s normally used to turn off phone displays when you hold them to your face, and Samsung realized that the same sensors could be used to detect movement – albeit not much, and not for very far: the sensor only detects movement within a few inches of the device.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a great device, but like any gadget it can suffer from the odd hiccup. From noticeable lag to Google glitches, here is how to fix common problems on the Galaxy Note 4.

First things first: make sure both your operating system and Samsung’s apps are up to date. Samsung has issued various updates since the Note 4 launched.

Wireless and Bluetooth issues

Sometimes cliches are true: have you tried turning it off and on again to fix a problem? Toggling Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off then on again sometimes solves connection issues, and rebooting your device can do the trick too. With Bluetooth, the issue might also be with the thing you’re trying to connect to: some accessories can only be paired with so many devices before they refuse to talk to any others. Resetting them solves that particular issue. With Wi-Fi, the culprit could be your router. We have to reboot ours all the time.

How to fix lag on the Galaxy Note 4

If you’re finding the system slow or stuttery, S Voice might be the cause of your problems: it waits for a double-tap to launch the S Voice app, and that wait can be noticeable if you just tap the Home key once. You can turn this feature off by launching S Voice and turning off Open Via Home Key.

How to speed up animations on the Galaxy Note 4

Go to Settings > More > Developer Options

If that isn’t there, go into About Device, scroll to Build Number and tap that five times. You should now see a message that tells you “Developer mode has been enabled. Repeat the previous step.

Scroll down to the section headed Drawing

Look for Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale and Animator Duration Scale.

You have two options with each of these: you can turn them off altogether, or you can double their speed by setting the scale to 0.5x (the other options are greater than 1 so they all slow things down even more). The difference is surprising, and makes your phone feel much faster.

How to disable the Lock Effect on the Galaxy Note 4

Lock screen animations are cute, but they also add unnecessary delay to something you do countless times a day. To disable them, go into My Device > Lock Screen and tap on Lock Effect. Choose “None” to disable the animations.

How to clear the app cache on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

If you’re experiencing the same problems again and again with a single app and you’re running the most up-to-date version, there’s a good chance that its cache needs clearing. To do that:

Bring down the notification area from the top of the screen and tap on the Settings icon.

Move to the Applications section and then look for Application Manager. Tap that and then tap on the name of the app whose cache you want to delete.

You should now see a screen with lots of options and information. The bit we’re looking for is the button that says Clear Cache. Make sure you tap this one and not the one that says Clear Data, because that – as you’d expect – clears all of the data for that application, such as user names, passwords, game progress and so on.

What to do when cache clearing doesn’t fix your app

If you’ve got an app-specific issue and clearing its cache doesn’t work, the next step is to do something that Windows users are well used to: uninstall the app, reboot your device and reinstall it. In many cases uninstalling the app will also take your data with it, so make sure there isn’t anything in it that you’d be devastated to lose.

How to clear the system cache on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

In many cases clearing the app cache for a troublesome app can solve your problems – but what happens if the problem is system wide rather than app specific? It could be that the System Cache needs a clearout, and you can do that by putting your Note 4 into recovery mode. To do that, you should turn off your Note and then follow these steps:

Press Power, Volume Up and Home simultaneously

Wait until the phone vibrates and then release Power and Home

You should now see the recovery screen. Use the volume buttons to move and select Wipe Cache Partition.

Press the Power button to confirm.

Select Reboot System Now and again, hit Power to confirm.

Wait until your Note 4 reboots and hope it’s fixed the problem.

What to do if clearing the app cache and system cache don’t work

A factory reset is the nuclear option, and as the name suggests it means resetting your phone to factory-fresh settings – so it’ll take your data with it. Always backup your stuff before trying this one.

Take out your external SD card, just in case. The reset probably won’t affect it, but why risk it?

Go into Settings and scroll to User and Backup.

Tap on Backup and Reset

Untick Back Up My Data, assuming you do actually have a backup

Tap Factory Data Reset

Enter your PIN or password if asked to. Tap Continue.

Tap on Delete All.
