#application guidelines

Hey dragon riders,

Are you excited to prepare your portfolios for this awesomesauce zine? Well, saddle up and get ready!

General Portfolio Requirements

Your portfolio should be a collection of your best work only, and it should be easily accessible/viewable. We prefer your samples to be collected in a Google Drive folder, which must be unlocked*, but you can also link a portfolio website if you have one.

*You can check if your Drive folder is unlocked (sharing enabled) by opening the link in a private/incognito window – if you can’t access it, neither can we. So please make sure to enable sharing before submitting. You can do this by changing the link setting to “Anyone with the link can view”.

Please, do not link tumblr or instagram pages if they feature all of your work instead of just best pieces. We are interested in viewing only curated content. If your galleries feature only selected work, then it’s ok to link these as portfolios.

Writers can either submit PDF pieces in their Google Drives, or you can link individual stories you have featured on your AO3/fanfiction.net

SPECIFICATIONS

For artists:

Your portfolio must contain 3-10 pieces of your best works.

The pieces in your portfolio do not have to be BNHA-centric, but we will certainly appreciate it if you do include some of those so we can see the characters in your style.

All pieces in your portfolio must be complete. Please do not submit sketches.

2/3 pieces should have a background. Backgrounds don’t have to be too detailed; we’d just like to get a sense of your skill.

Your pieces don’t have to feature dragons, but it would be advised to include pieces that feature any kind of animals/creatures/monsters, just so that we can get a sense of what you are capable of.

If you are applying for a position of a merch artist, please make sure to show samples of merch designs.

If you are applying to be a comic artist, please make sure to show samples of comics.

For writers:

Your portfolio must contain 3 of your best works.

The pieces in your portfolio should be 2-3k words long.

No mature content.

We would prefer it if all your pieces are complete oneshots instead of chapters/excerpts.

The stories in your portfolio must be BNHA-centric, as we are mostly interested in your ability to portray the characters genuinely.

It’s not required, but it would be helpful if you had at least one piece written in a fantasy setting.

We prefer reading gen stories, but you can also submit a ship-centered story if you don’t have enough general ones to fill up the portfolio quote.

General Portfolio Requirements

All works must be SFW.

Inclusion of at least one The Promised Neverland sample is strongly recommended, but it is not essential.

All samples must be shared via google drive links/folders on the application form.

You will be asked to provide a link to your portfolio for our reference. This can be your Instagram, DeviantArt, AO3, FFN, Google Drive folder or anything which will lead us to all your works.

Applications that do not meet the required criteria will be automatically rejected.

Artists

Please select 3-5 of your works that best showcase your talent to their fullest.

At least 2 of your selected images must have backgrounds

All content submitted must be high resolution.

The content submitted must be entirely your own and not a collaboration with another artist or partially traced.

Writers

Please choose 3 samples of your best works between 1500-3000 words each.

These samples may be excerpts of longer works but please ensure it will be easy to follow without the context of the rest of the piece it is part of.

Your samples can be either of published or unpublished pieces.

Merch Artists

Please select 3-5 samples of your works that best showcase your talent to their fullest.

At least 2 samples must be complete merch pieces.

Your selected images must be high resolution.

The content submitted must be entirely your own and not a collaboration with another artist or partially traced.

We’re halfway through the interest check, so we decided to post the application guidelines so everyone can prepare for the upcoming contributor applications! The document below will include guidelines for writers, artists, and merch artists, so feel free to take a peek and send us an ask if you have anymore questions.

Writing

One example up to 5k is allowed, but the others must be 3k or less. Contributors will likely have a 2.5k-3k limit max, so take that into consideration. Excerpts are allowed, but at least one completed work is required.

Writing for other fandoms and original fiction may be used, but at least one example must be BNHA.

Reader-inserts and RPF are not allowed as examples.

Characterization is the top priority and will be the category we judge the most critically. AUs receive a little wiggle room, as long as we can picture them developing that way given the different background, setting, and/or circumstances.

Including at least one piece with Shigaraki is preferable, but it is not a requirement.

We will also be judging grammar, spelling, structure, voice, word-flow, and cohesiveness.

Mediums such as traditional or painting are allowed but must be properly scanned so we can see them in the digital format.

Keep the rating PG-13/T or below for examples and include any trigger warnings that may apply.

Art

Your examples and portfolio should contain completed pieces only.

At least one BNHA example.

One example of Shigaraki is preferable, but it is not a requirement.

Judging will be focused on the background, color, shading, lineart (if applicable), and anatomy.

Background will be the category judged most critically. This will be different for those applying as merch artists since it might not be relevant for some merch not including prints.

Composition (as in overall appearance) is also important. Does the picture come to life or is the person just standing there?

Keep the rating PG-13/T or below for examples.

General

No NSFW content.

No incest, adult/minor, or intentionally abusive content.

Per our interest check, the following characters may not be included in applications to this zine: Endeavor, All for One, Daruma Ujiko, Overhaul/Chisaki Kai, and Mineta Minoru.

Writers

You must provide at least three examples of your best work. If you desire, you may also link a portfolio. Your portfolio can be your Ao3, a Google Drive folder, Wix, or other similar website. If your writing is on websites like tumblr, please link to your specific writing tag, rather than an entire blog.

Only one example has to be a BNHA fic; original writing and fics from other fandoms are allowed for the rest. However, RPF (real person fanfiction) is not allowed.

Samples must be within the range of 1-3k, allowing for about 500 words of overflow.

Excerpts are allowed, but it is in your best interest to make sure all samples have a defined beginning, middle, and end. Remember, one of the things we need to know is if you can work within a limited word count.

The inclusion of rare pairs in samples is encouraged, but not required.

Judging will be based on characterization, spelling and grammar, story structure, and wordflow.

Artists

Artists will be asked to provide three examples of their best works. If you so desire, you may also submit a portfolio. Your portfolio can be a Google Drive folder, Wix, Instagram, or other similar website. If you use Tumblr, please link to your specific art tag rather than an entire blog.

You are not required to include BNHA art in your portfolio, but it is encouraged.

Backgrounds are not a requirement, but they are highly encouraged.

The inclusion of rare pairs in your samples is also encouraged, but not required.

Judging will be based on anatomy, color, composition, and background.

An example containing more than one person is preferred.

Artist Guidelines:

Artists will be asked to submit three (3) art samples. Please select pieces that reflect your strengths and skill level, as well as the quality you plan to bring to the project.

We will require that at least one sample showcase the cast of Yuri!!! On Ice. In addition, we require that one sample have a complete background and one have a full body rendering of a person. Provided you meet all requirements, one or two of your samples may be of other fandoms or original work. 

Author Guidelines:

Authors will be asked to submit a maximum of three (3) writing samples where the total word count does not exceed 3000 words. Please select pieces that not only reflect what you feel are your strengths and general tone in writing, but the quality you will devote to our project.

We will require that at least one sample showcase the cast of Yuri!!! On Ice so we can get a feel for your characterization. Your other samples may be of other fandoms or original work.
