Appendix Out, 'The Rye Bears A Poison' CD (Drag City)

I haven't listened to this band in many years, since my Alasdair Roberts fixation, until I got a good deal on this disc the other day. It is startling to compare the masterful assuredness and polished aspect of his later solo albums with this earlier, spindlier effort. I have often thought of the AO/AR continuum as a sort of Scottish mirror to the Will Oldham/Palace/Bonnie "Prince" Billy one, both starting out with raggedy band identities and evolving into a much more stately and refined vision; a neat album but not gonna get listened to again before any of the above-mentioned AR albums.
