What is App Fatigue and How can it Be Avoided!
There are a lot of apps in the App Store and Google Play and both have achieved billions of downloads. It almost seems that we as society simply cannot stop our addiction to apps. But if you look closer to what’s happening there are a few issues that need to be addressed in order to not contract “App Fatigue”.
The App Market has been in existence for little under a decade. Since then millions of apps have flooded the market with a great majority of them being of mediocre quality. If you notice the volume of comments on each of these apps over time, you’ll begin to notice something peculiar.
Whether people are simply too lazy or too frustrated the trends seem to indicate that people are providing less feedback on bad apps. Also another issue that one can observe is that the ‘type of comments’ are getting more aggressive as well.
This could mean that we as a society are developing an App Tolerance or an App Standard which society believes to be the norm. IF your app falls below this Norm then you might be subject for some aggressive feedback. As an App developer that is not something you want to hear about your baby.
But there is a justification for this response. Many app developers took advantage of the virgin terrain of app development and the massive pool of clients that they developed sloppy code that crashes, fails and frustrates.
In this Free market space the consumer is the one who decides whether a brand is worth it or not, and it seems that to please the average user is getting increasingly difficult.
A New Approach to Development
For those of you only getting into the Development game and for seasoned veterans it is imperative to listen to your demographics. People like to ‘Co-create’ and for games that involved their audience in the development process usually tends to get a warmer response to their game, even if it’s buggy.
What this means is that if you involve someone in the process, they ‘own the idea’ and start forming a bias to it. This will ultimately create an app that is closer to the desire of the user, and helps the developer reach his or her target much quicker.
The biggest issue is to NOT release buggy apps. People have become very critical about their perception on what an app should be and no longer is there a tolerance for releasing buggy apps.
With a market worth billions it is absolutely vital to pay attention to these types of changes. They might seem subtle and not too important but based on these trends, releasing a buggy app could cost you your reputation which can hurt your longevity as an app developer.
As developers it is not just our job to create the app, but to create an app that is acceptable to the market. The standards of app development is getting stricter and if you do not follow the trends, it could cost you dearly.
