APOLLO 8 - Chicago, Illinois. The Apollo 8 Command Module on display in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. This mission launched December 21, 1968 and returned six days later. This historic NASA lunar spacecraft carried astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders as they traveled into deep space on a mission that achieved many firsts: the first manned-mission to leave Earth's orbit and gravity, the first to reach and orbit the Moon (10 times), and the first to carry men to view the Moon's Dark Side and witness an "Earthrise." The Museum also holds several other Apollo 8 artifacts, including Borman's mission flight suit, which is displayed next to the Command Module.
