ā Dawn of the Apocalypse (Part 1/2: Regrettable Deals) ā
How long had it been since he had seen the sun? This question floated though the little wizardās mind as he laid down in his void.
This was a final test, but to them, it was more of a punishment. The thought of one day being included in Magnificusā deck had been keeping him going, but it was quickly losing its charm.
āPleaseā¦just let this be over.ā They would mutter to themselves. āI donāt care if I fail or notā¦I just want to be free.ā But alas, these pleas were never heard. No one seemed to care for the poor, poor wizard.
Until one day, something responded.
Reality itself seemed to warp as a red mass of pixels slipped its way inside the wizardās void. The trek seemed to have exhausted the thing, so it sat as still as a statue. But that didnāt stop the wizard from noticing it.
He was very tempted to rush over and start poking and prodding the thing, but a part of him wondered if this was another part of the test. They wanted freedom, yes, and passing their test might just be their ticket out of here. After what felt like an eternity to the little student, the mass finally uncurled itself, revealing a humanoid figure.
It snapped itās fingers, and a static-covered card appeared in its hand.
Ģ“āĢ·IĢ“ Ģ·cĢøaĢ“nĢ· ̵dĢ·oĢø Ģøm̶aĢ·.̵.Ģ“n̶yĢø Ģ·g̶rĢ“e̵aĢ“tĢ· ̶tĢøh̵iĢ·n̶g̶sĢ·,Ģ“ ̵l̵i̵tĢøtĢølĢ“eĢø ̶o̵nĢøe̵.Ģ“ Ģ“YĢ·oĢ“uĢø Ģ·nĢ“aĢ“mĢøe̵ Ģ·i̶tĢ“,Ģ· Ģ·aĢ·n̶dĢø ̵i̶t̶āĢøsĢø Ģ“y̵oĢø.Ģø.Ģøu̵rĢ“sĢ“.Ģ·āĢ“
The wizardās eyes widened. āA-Anything?ā
āAĢ·n̵yĢøtĢ“hĢ·iĢ“n̵gĢ“.̵ā̵
He didnāt need to think about his choice at all. He already knew what he wanted.
āI wish to be free! To see the sun once more! To-ā
āĢ·CĢøoĢ“n̶s̶iĢ“d̵e̶rĢø ĢøiĢ·tĢ“ ̵dĢøoĢøn̶eĢø.Ģøā̶
The entity offered a hand to the student, who quickly shook it. Before they could let go, however, a shooting pain shot up the wizardās arm.
āOĢønĢ·eĢ· ̶lĢ“aĢ·s̶t̵ ̵tĢøhĢ·i̵nĢ“gĢ“.Ģ“ ̶TĢ·hĢ“iĢ·sĢø ̵mĢøi̵gĢøhĢ·tĢ· ̶hĢ·uĢ·r̶t̶ Ģ·a̵ Ģ“bĢøiĢ·tĢø.Ģ“ā̶
The void was spinning faster and faster now, and the entity was just a red blur of light. Quickly pulling away, the unfortunate victim of the rogue data only made it a few steps away before collapsing. With another snap of their fingers, both the red creature and the student were gone.
One down. Three to go.
āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
When the Prospector first noticed the red light, he had been doing what he was always doing: mining for gold. He had stepped away for a few moments to catch his breath when an unnatural voice called out from behind him.
āHuh? Who goes there?ā The Prospector responded, startled. Normally his faithful hound would have alerted him to any approaching stranger. Why was she so quiet?
āShow yerself!ā
A red figure with a snakelike tail slowly emerged from the trees with its hands in front of it.
āA chat, ye say?ā
āBitter make it quick. I gots a job to do!ā
The red figure smiled, before gliding over to the rock the Prospector was working on.
āThatās it? Ye came out all the way here to ask me teā join ya?ā
He waved his hand dismissively before turning back towards the boulder.
āForgit it.ā
The Prospector swung his pickaxe down, before freezing right before it hit the rock. After a few moments of hesitation, he put the tool down before looking back over at the red figure.
āIf you can keep your word, I suppose I can help ye.ā
The red figure extended a clawed hand, and the Prospector promptly shook it. He only realized that something was wrong when a burst of pain shot up his arm. He didnāt even hit the ground before the world went dark, the last sounds he heard being the laughter of that red entity.
Two down, two to go.
āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
It was yet another standard work day for the Melter. However, there was an almost palpable taste of dread in the air, like the very factory itself was waiting for something bad to happen.
Suddenly, something caught the botās synthetic eye. Instead of the usual metal, a card, completely covered in static, was slowly traveling down the conveyor belt.
"What a peculiar sight. Hm..."
They knew that they should have just left the card where it was. Who knows? Maybe P03 would finally be satisfied by it. But curiosity was getting the better of them, and before it could leave their room, the Melter snatched the odd card.
Two different voices seemed to come out of the robot as they turned to face the sneaky individual who had somehow managed to slip their way inside the Melter's room.
The red figure was standing there, leaning against the conveyor belt like he owned the place.
The Melter hesitated, the flame on their head flaring up for a moment.
"I...am not going to answer that question. Now leave me alone! I must be getting back to my work."
The red figure nodded, before turning to leave. But right before he passed through the door, the entity said one last comment.
He stuck his hand out towards the Melter.
"S̸o̓.̶ ̓D̶o̵ ̶w̓e̓ ̸h̸a̶v̓e̶ ̓a̓ ̓d̶e̵a̶l̷?̓"
The robot considered their options...before eventually shaking the entity's hand.
"NONONO-"
Before it could even react, they abruptly fell to the ground.
Their system was practically screaming at them about corrupted files. But before anything could be done, the unfortunate machine shut down, leaving Ol_card to pick up his static card before walking out of the room with the Melter disappearing shortly afterwards.
Three down, one to go.
āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
In the human world, the smell of ash and burnt machinery lingered around what remained of GameFuna's location in āāāāāāā. One of the few things that survived the blaze that had been extinguished mere hours before was a computer and the red floppy disk that had been inserted into it.
On the screen, a new female challenger appeared. She stumbled around aimlessly as if it were her first time walking, before eventually finding herself on one of the many bridges that connected all of Inscryption's islands together.
She left the centre island and decided to travel to the right, completely oblivious to the red mass of pixels that was silently following her.
Entering what was once the domain of beasts, the new challenger discovered that it was now full of terrifying monsters which promptly chased her out. But when she went to cross the bridge once more, the red mass appeared out of nowhere before sprinting into her, causing the screen to go black.
An act 2 battle initiated itself, with the red mass at one end of the table and the frightened new challenger at the other. The challenger used her generic deck to the best of her abilities, and was actually winning.
Despite appearing to not be very familiar with this world, the challenger certainly knew how to play Inscryption. She was just two points of damage away from beating this...this monster. It was all going so well.
...until Ol_card played his signature static card, that is. Once it was struck it rapidly duplicated itself, before the scale took a nosedive in the unfortunate soul's direction.

You remember the devlogs from Kayceeās Mod? Well, hereās my spin on them for the Apocalyption AU. If they were real, theyād be accessible without Kayceeās Mod (though still needing to be unlocked.)
ā Devlogs and DATA (Part 1/2) ā
LOG 1
Today I finally get to do something meaningful with this company. From the day they hired me, all I got to do was bug hunt and playtest weird games from franchises that no one has even heard of.
I know that Iām not the most experienced coder out there, but come on! I can do so much more than what theyāre letting me.
Anyways, theyāre letting me work on this new project. Inscription, I believe itās called? I know virtually nothing about it. But hey. Iām sure Itāl be more fun than reporting glitches all day.
LOG 2
Itās been a day or two since I started working on Inscryption, and I have to admit: it seems promising. I mean, how many virtual card games are out there? At least itās not an UNO clone.
Iāve only done small things so far like making sure that certain animations display properly. Itās another 2D game, just like GameFunaās previous works, but it looks like some 3D stuff will be implemented later on, which is cool.
Iām considering poking around the files when I get the chance. Wonder what other neat stuff I can find in here before itās inevitably left on the cutting room floor.
LOG 3
So, I was looking through some folders when I found this file that looked out of place. It was labelled as āOL_CARD.zipā, so I decided to unzip it. What I got was a single exe file that did nothing when opened. Mustāve been a card placeholder or something?
Anyways, I left it alone because the last thing I want is some higher-up getting mad at me for ātampering with the game.ā Besides. I kinda want to look into it some more.
Now all I gotta do is find it. Call me crazy, but itās not in the folder I last saw it in. I swear, Iām gonna be seriously angry if this is some virus.
LOG 4
ITS FUCKING ALIVE HOLY SHIT
LOG 5
Note to self: redo log 4.
I still donāt know whatās going on, but when I booted up Inscryption, there was this red mass of pixels right outside Leshyās cabin. I tried interacting with it, and a text box full of gibberish showed up.
I decided to ignore it and check up on the scrybe, and I found that Leshy seemedā¦off. His personality still isnāt very fleshed out, but he seemed to be on edge. The other NPCs in the area were, too. Thatās when I shut off the game.
But that damn red thing was on my desktop now.
It couldnāt open a text box with Inscryption closed, so it opened Notepad instead. Let me copy and paste what it said.
H̷e̶l̓l̷o̶ ̓t̓h̓e̸r̸e̵!̸
̵:̸)̶
I wish I was making this up. Is this some kind of advanced AI? If so, why are they keeping it hidden in this random-freaking file tucked away in the back of a card game?
I have so many questions. And a part of me wants to ask this thing for answers.
LOG 6
Out of every single employee, Iām the one who gets the haunted game. Seems about right considering my luck.
Well, Iām not sure if this thing is a ghost or not. Iāve been talking to āOlcardā by adding text into the code, and itās been responding with those bugged text boxes. At least itās getting better at using them.
Whatever it is, itās really curious about the game and its development. Iāve asked my fellow coders if anything similar is happening to them, and they all give me weird looks. Iām half expecting to wake up any minute now.
Iāve finished up Leshyās area and Iām working on Grimoraās next. Olcard gave me some good tips when I got stuck, so I think keeping him around a little while longer wouldnāt hurt anyone.
Hope yāall like Apocalyption, as I wouldnāt be surprised if I end up posting about it semi-frequently (if you couldnāt tell from the three story posts. š) Been focusing on Scaly Summit for a while now and a temporary change of pace never hurt anyone.
Anyways, hereās some references for both one of the Scrybes, and Radge. The others are coming soon(ish.)
Because some people (on Discord) really like my silly goofy AU robot man, I decided that I was gonna do this! Yāall know who you are, and this is for you :)
ā Skeletons in his Closet ā
A robot fitted with cowboy-esque attire wandered through some mostly desolate plains. Radge was made with the intention of hunting down anyone who displeased his master, and for the most part, he did his job well.
There was only one teeny tiny little issue:
Radge wasnāt alone.
Before the game was modified (which he referred to as āthe changeā), the bot had been working on his own little creations. However, he could hardly recall anything about them because most of his memories had been wiped, and the rest were corrupted.
But the Uberbots? He couldnāt forget them. Mainly because sometime during āthe changeā, their files had somehow become unzipped, and were now living within his mind.
āMovement spotted. Potentially the target.ā The Photographer said. Due to his sensitive optical sensors, he had been helping Radge with hunting down their most recent target: an oddly small Smiling that had wandered from Pafjynās island and was now intruding on Krozzarās land.
They had been stalking the infected for some time now, and nearly lost it when the Photographer offered his assistance. Radge was cautious when it came to letting an Uberbot take control, so he only did it when on a mission, and away from his master.
āHey, Radge?ā
When G0lly abruptly spoke up, she inadvertently ābootedā Radge into the inky black confines of his synthetic subconscious. He was only there for a moment, but it felt like an eternity without his optical or auditory sensors.
āJeez, G0lly! You canāt just butt in when another Uberbot and I are both piloting. You might throw off Photoās focus.ā
āIām sorryā¦.I just thought of a question and reaaaaly wanted to know the answer.ā
This time, G0lly had the decency to send a direct message instead of taking control of his speakers.
āFine, fine.ā He replied. āBut make it quick.ā
:0
āThank you!!ā
āSoā¦how come you only let Photographer help you out? Why canāt we do one of your super cool missions?ā
Radge pauses for a moment, before sending a private message to the Photographer asking him if he could be the sole pilot for now (to which he responds with a thumbs up emoji.)
āā¦Well, Iāve given an offer to the Archivist in the past, and she politely declined. And you know how Canvas can get sometimes. I didnāt want them to get overwhelmedāā
āThatās weird. I never got an invite. How come?ā
Oh, G0lly. She was much too pure for this cruel, dark world. Radge promised himself that heād keep her safe from the horrors he and the others had to experience because of Krozzar.
And h̵̬̹ĶĶi̺̓̔ĢĢĢĢĶm̶ĶĶĢĢĢĶĶ .̶ĢĢĢ ĢĶ
āOh. Well, I probably just- forgot. Yeah.ā
āā¦Come to think of it, you never invite me to do anything. You donāt even let me pilot.ā
Radge noted that G0lly sounded like she was on the verge of tears, even though she was physically incapable of doing so.
āWhyā¦why do you leave me out? Do you hate me that much?ā
āWhat? No. Why would you think that, G0llāā
āTarget acquired.ā
Seeing his chance to leave this awkward situation, Radge goes to re-pilot his body alongside the Photographer. Once he reconnected to his optic sensors, Radge notices the limp figure laying on the ground in front of him.
āIs it-ā
āUnconscious. Krozzar requested it be taken alive, correct?ā
āY-Yeahā¦ā
They were essentially a robotic hitman, but Radge could never get used to the feeling of actually eliminating a target.
āI can take it from here. Thank you, Phots.ā
āNo problem.ā
With the small infected slung over his shoulder, Radge thought that things would get easier from here.
āWH#T DID YOU S#Y TO HER?ā
Nevermind.
āHeyyy there, Canvas! I thought you were taking a rest.ā
āS#rry for yelling, but G0llyās gon# quiet. She s#id that she āfinally g#t her answer.ā W#at did you say to #er?ā
āG0lly sent me a notification. Is something wrong?ā
āNone of your business, Archivist. Now can you please justāā
āI have received a notification as well.ā
āYouāre all here! Awesome!!ā
āIām trying to convince Radge that Iām tough enough to help him with his missions, and I thought that you guys can help me with that!ā
āTough enough? Oh, G0llyā¦ā
Every wire in Radgeās body felt like it was melting. His system couldnāt handle the strain of everyone attempting to pilot at once. The bot froze in place, twitching. Itās screen flickering from one set of eyes to the next.
āI agr#e with G0lly. Itās #nly fair that she g#ts to do a mis#ion.ā
āThis workā¦this worldā¦itās all too much for her. Iām sorry, G0lly, but Iām siding with Radge on this one. What do you say, Photographer?ā
āI have little opinion on this matter, as long as our tasks are still completed.ā
ā-and I can complete them!ā
āCan you aLL JUST SHUT UP!?!ā
Silence.
āPleaseā¦.just *hhh* stop. All of you. Just stopā¦ā
āWe appear to be overheating.ā
āPerhaps we overdid it a bit..ā
One by one, the Uberbots slowly receded back into their shared digital headspace, leaving just Radge.
And G0lly.
She didnāt say anything, but Radge could sense that she was still there.
āā¦G0lly?ā
āā¦ā
āIā I wonāt beat around the bush anymore. Iām sorry. Youāre justā¦so positive. Youāre the only ray of sunshine we have in this miserable world, and I donāt want to lose you. I donāt want to lose you like how I lost mys-ā
āā¦..ā
āDoā¦do you want to look at animal pictures when we get back?ā
āThatās all you had to say.ā
:)
And with that, G0lly was gone as well. But not before sending one last private message.
āIām still kinda sadā¦but I get it. Can I at least help you and the Photographer find targets?ā
āMaybe.ā Radge replied as the familiar sights of the heart of Krozzarās domain faded into view.
Hereās the last six devlogs written by my version of Kaycee for the Apocalyption AU :)
ā Devlogs and DATA (Part 2/2) ā
LOG 7
I found that a portion of my Inscryption-related files got corrupted for some reason, so I moved Olcardās file to my desktop as I restored my backup. But then I came back to my computer after a small break to see him literally googling things. Like. What?
I moved his file back to Inscryption, but that didnāt stop Olcard from āexploringā my computer. We had a chat in notepad about why I donāt want him to do that, and he seemed to understand.
I know heās āspecialā and all, but I wonāt hesitate to send Olcard to the recycling bin if he keeps this up. The higherups are starting to notice me and I donāt want him blowing it.
LOG 8
Olcardās been messing with my computer again. I remember closing everything before turning it off after work yesterday, but when I turned it on this morning, both the search engine and Inscryption were open.
According to the search history, Olcard was brushing up on his spriting knowledge. I almost didnāt want to see what changes he made to the game, but I knew I had to for the sake of my job. Long story short, he messed with some of the Challengerās sprites. Now this wouldnāt be concerning if it wasnāt for the fact that he completely covered their faces in red.
Olcard mustāve known that I would be mad, as I couldnāt find him anywhere on my computer. This is getting ridiculous. I think Iām just going to keep working on dialogue, and deal with undoing his tampering later.
Speaking of Olcard, I caught a glimpse of him on my desktop for a split second. I might be wrong, but he looked a little bit different.
LOG 9
Olcard definitely looks different. I managed to keep him on my screen long enough to talk to him. Heās still a mass of red pixels, but heās definitely got arms and what looks like a singular leg now.
You know what? Iām just going to include the conversation we had. It speaks for itself.
Pardon my language, but what the fuck? I donāt have a working microphone on this thing AND the webcam is covered up! How did he know I had a water bottle with me?! It might have just been a lucky guess. Yeah.
I think Iām going to move his folder to the recycling bin, but not emptying it. That should get my point across.
LOG 10
I think it worked. I havenāt heard from Olcard in a few days, and I havenāt found any new corrupted files or tampered sprites. Maybe I should just go ahead and delete him. I mean, he was helpful at first, but as of recently all Olcard did was get on my nerves.
Iām being asked to help test out the mox mechanic. Donāt get me wrong: I hate playtesting, but I feel like Iām in need of a change of pace. I think I can finally put this weird AI thing behind me now.
āā
So Iām about to play a few rounds with Magnificus, and I noticed a new, completely static covered card in my starting hand. I played it, and it crashed the game. Now Inscryption refuses to start. Great. Just when my luck was starting to turn.
LOG 11
I managed to get Inscryption to run again, and I only have one thing to say: what the heck is happening? Some NPCs have gone missing, and thereās zero trace of them anywhere in the files. And all of the scrybeās dialogue keep mentioning āthe redā or āthe data.ā
The higherups are asking for a status report. What do I say? āOh, the Prospector, the Melter, and one of Magnificusā students went missing, and now Inscryption is starting to look funny. Everythingās a-ok here!ā
The game refuses to close, and Iām stuck playing it normally. The bridge is broken in three spots, leaving me with only one option: Leshyās zone. But the trees have multiplied on the overworld map, and it looks like thereās more than just a cabin now.
Iām not dealing with this. If this is what Olcard wants the game to be like, he should have asked me to make a mod once itās complete. I did what I should have done a long time ago, which was unplugging the computer.
But it didnāt turn off.
LOG 12
He didnāt let me in the cabin. Told me to wait, so I did. I waited until everyone left the building. Canāt believe this guy is making me work overtime. I am beyond mad at him at this point and canāt wait to finally erase this jerk (after having one last talk, of course.)
As I finally was let into the cabin all the lights in the building turned off, leaving the computer monitor as my only light source. The power had been iffy the last few days so this was just a coincidence, right?
I didnāt see Leshy anywhere inside the cabin. Instead, a red person with an animal-like head was in his spot. I audibly muttered a āwho the heck-ā and to my surprise, the figure answered me.
Part of me wanted to rush up to the computer, itās fan droning louder and louder in the pitch-black space, but I resisted. Well, I resisted long enough to write this down on my phone.
Iām not going to pass up the chance to give Olcard a piece of my mind before emptying the recycling bin. Iāve had it with him. This ends today.

So yeah. I call it the Apocalyption AU and to sum it up, itās a version of the game with no OLD_DATA so everyoneās a bit nicer, and no oneās sentient. Sounds great, right? It is.
Until he shows up.
Whoās the āheā? Well, itās OL_CARD, of course! A fully sentient version of the OLD_DATA that Kaycee tried (and failed) to remove from the game. After building a body for itself, OL_CARD completely flips Inscryption on its head, reducing the scrybes to mere underlings and tricking I mean recruiting one underling from each zone and making them the new scrybes.
In total, thereās:
Faetol, the grim Scrybe of Souls
Pafjyn, the monstrous Scrybe of Pestilence
Krozzar, the power-hungry Scrybe of Combat
and Inedio, the avian Scrybe of Wither
And then thereās the once-scrybes, now servants for the very same people who replaced them.
Mirg, a relaxed, kindly spirit who enjoys aiding the challenger
Yhsel, a mutated āSmilingā who serves Pafjyn
Radge, a machine built for target-eliminating (and a fan favourite)
and finally Ingam, a totally-completely-mentally-sound creature covered in magically-induced rot
But what unfortunate souls became the new scrybes? Will anyone be able to recover their memories and stop OL_CARD? And how does the challenger fit into this? Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cardsā¦
