Imagínate que estás en un mundo post-apocalíptico, en donde todas las comodidades que has disfrutado durante toda tu vida y que das por sentado han desaparecido de repente y para siempre. ¿Cómo crees que reaccionarías en una situación como esa? ¿Lo aguantarías y estarías contento? O, ¿pasarías la mayoría del tiempo maldiciendo tu destino? A todos nos gustaría imaginarnos a nosotros mismos como el primero; sin embargo, el segundo es una representación más precisa de cómo actuaríamos, y así exactamente es nuestro “héroe” en la miniserie de Peter Bagge.

MARVEL como nuestro protagonista, asolado por el asma, un ex gerente miope de nivel medio de una compañía de software, tiene sus limitadas habilidades de supervivencia puestas a prueba continuamente, solo para continuamente quedarse corto. Exaltante al ver como su tonto amigo de la infancia, Jeff Beasley, abusa de él, y como él abusa de su nueva situación al encontrarse como el indiscutible macho alfa de los dos.  Nervios al ver como lo que queda de la civilización humana se deteriora continuamente a su alrededor, y ellos con ellas.

Además, cada número contará con una historia de fondo hasta que detalla anécdotas humorísticas y angulosas acerca de los Padres fundadores de América. Por último, George Washington, y su banda, será protagonista en sus propios cómics.

Este cómic tiene 6 números en formato B&W, con número de páginas que varía entre las 24 y 32 páginas aproximadamente—Aunque Dark Horse ha sacado también un TPB con 120 páginas— y fue publicado en el 2005.

Además, como dato curioso, Hernán Migoya fue, también, el encargado de traducir el cómic para España en el 2007 y lo definió como “la versión freak de Amanecer Rojo”. [Vía Comic Pasión]

The book Apocalypse Nerd by Peter Bagge relates to the destruction of the town when two simple middle-aged guys, Peter and Gordo, began driving to go on a camping trip to the North Cascade Mountains when everything changed for them. Everyone in the town began to panic when the town became a nuclear wasteland after Kim Jung Il bombed it and everything then took a turn for the people of the town. This caused everyone to fight for their lives, which became a major conflict for everyone, choosing to kill someone or die himself or herself. One of the main characters was Peter, he is a scared man who didn’t want to live the way they were forced to live, he panicked about everything and refused to live off of others and animals. Gordo was much different, he was a strong, open-minded, man who knew he could do anything with or without Peter; he was the hunter for the two of them and knew this was what had to happen. The book was following Peter and Gordo the majority of the time. The book took place recently in a country style town during the summer season.

3. The media used to create the artwork in the book Apocalypse Nerd was created using digital/computer tools, this made the story easy to understand and read. The type was clear and large enough to see. The style of the artwork was realistic, the people were clear enough to tell who they were and the setting was clear enough of read but not all of the artwork was completely real life, many of the things were abstracted. The characters in the book were very expressionistic and drawn with some thick and some thin lines to make certain things pop out more. Some of the drawings are sketchy to represent their emotions. The book expresses the lines very well to show the movement and expression of the people and the surroundings. The author uses thicker lines to show the subject matter and uses thinner lines to give the background a definition. To make show the characteristics on each person, the author uses rhythm and repetition by using key traits on each box so that the reader can easily understand each character.

4. The author really expressed to the reader about the effects of a nuclear bomb. He expressed emotions from many different viewpoints and showed what the outcomes could be. The author not only gave viewpoints from the average male, but also from women of all ages and older and younger men. The book engaged the viewer into seeing things from others eyes and raised awareness of the chance of a nuclear bomb. By showing what Peter wanted to do and what Gordo wanted to do definitely explored different decisions that the average person could have made and what the outcomes would have been. The importance of this book could be to raise awareness to the average person about a nuclear bomb and what could happen to us at anytime while being humorous to keep the reader engaged.

5. I think that the biggest strength in the graphic novel was the author’s use of dialogue because it was very interesting to my read. I think that it stood out and was interesting to read because I could relate to it, the book was interesting to see what outcomes could come with a nuclear bomb. The author told the story in a way that could connect rather than writing like a boring history book, he connected with the average human from this generation. The book was very enjoyable to read because of the great use of transitions; the author \stayed on subject very well and described each scene very well by using dialogue and drawings. The drawings were abstracted but very understanding, believable and expressionistic to the occasion.

6. The author did a great job of drawing and considering many sides of the event but I think they could have considered a different ending when writing the story. I think that the story ended in a weird spot and was too open-ended. When seeing the title I was unsure what to expect, even at the end of the book, I am not 100% sure what the “Nerd” stands for. The author did a great job of choosing his characters but at sometimes the drawings were confusing on who was who.

7. If I were to recommend this book to anyone I would not recommend it to anyone too young because there is many nudity scenes and swearing. I think someone who enjoys humor and is not offended by swearing or nudity would enjoy this book. Someone who is open-minded and would enjoy seeing what could happen if a nuclear bomb hit would highly enjoy this book. Anyone in the age from 16+ would enjoy this, it gave me a new understanding on a major event that I may have never considered reading about. This book overall was easily to understand and something that kept my attention and would recommend it to anyone mature enough for the parts including swearing and nudity.
