it’s actually pretty interesting that Cormac McCarthy was influenced by Moby Dick, because the idea of setting out on a quest and becoming so fixed on the outcome that the journeys struggles become entirely irrelevant is prevalent in TOATPH. The main characters set off with hope and light hearts, and by the end of the novel, the protagonist is alone because of his obsession with fulfilling his goal.
