Did you know that the Black Bean Aphid (Aphis fabae) alternates its host plant depending on the time of year? During the warm months they feed on crop plants, like beets, beans, carrots, or potatoes. As the winter approaches, they migrate to a shrub (typically a spindle tree) and overwinter with their eggs. The eggs that survive the winter all hatch into wingless females. They reproduce asexually until the winged females hatch. They then fly to their other host plant. They can continue to reproduce asexually but some do mate sexually, providing the eggs that survive the winter.
