Aldeyjarfoss The river Skalfandafljot is fed by the Vatnajokull ice cap passes through barren lava fields before falling 20 metres into a lovely amphitheatre framed with columns of cooled basalt. The top of the field is made of blocky basalt, called a'a by geologists (using the traditional Hawaiian name), and apalhraun in Icelandic.
