October is probably one of my favorite months: the weather in the northeast starts to chill, the leaves start to wither and die, and the lead-up to Halloween begins again. Horror films, pumpkins and candy rule the beginning of the fall for me, and what better companion for the season than a few podcasts to keep you on your toes? After all, scary stories are the gasoline on the bonfire of Samhain. Below are five shows that will have you checking your closet for ghouls in no time.
Letās come right out of the gate with probably the most terrifying show on this entire list, the No Sleep Podcast. Host David Cummings employs himself and a cast of writers and voice actors to create and enact tales of horror that are nothing short of chilling. The showās sixth season was just recently launched its sixth season last month, which has already yielded some blood-curdling stories from its authors. This may also be the only podcast on this list that has legitimately given me nightmares at least once; you may think thatās just me talking up the show, but that is the absolute honest truth. Find the episode with a story called āThe Stumpā and see if you donāt end up in the same boat.
Knifepoint Horror is more akin to a found footage film than elaborate horror (donāt take that as an insult, as Iām a fan of the subgenre), which may not be the primary objective for creator and narrator Soren Narnia. In the showās description, Knifepoint is depicted as adhering āto the most primal element of storytelling: a single human voice describing events exactly as it experienced themā. The show prides itself on avoiding any elaborate narration, extraneous gore or obscenity-laced fiction, and it definitely adds to the isolated recordings of these fictitious accounts. Just one voice recounting tales of terror as desolate as you can imagine. Despite the fact that this podcast is not on a continuous release schedule and sparsely posts new episodes, there is an archive of 33 prior stories to visit.
Ā THE BLACK TAPES PODCAST
You may be familiar with the Black Tapes Podcast. The show has been receiving nothing but glowing reviews and recommendations from many in the podcasting community and has been burning up the iTunes charts for a while. Melding the NPR true crime show Serial with the sci-fi/horror angles and storylines of The X-Files, the Black Tapes follows public radio show host Alex Regan as she works hand-in-hand with renowned skeptic Dr. Richard Strand to dig into cases of the paranormal, as well as Dr. Strandās tumultuous past, and either debunk the cases or investigate them further. The show is coming up on the finale for its inaugural season, so thereās about a dozen episodes to check out, as well as bonus content such as listener mail.
Ā THE ANYTHING GHOST PODCAST
Now for some nonfiction. Anything Ghost is a crowdsourced podcast recounting the real paranormal experiences by the showās listeners, mostly narrated by the showās creator Lex Wahl, but occasionally those who share their stories will also record their own retelling. Wahl also contributes the music and sound effects found within each episode, which adds a great and creepy touch to the real stories. The show has become a staple in the horror podcast community, and with well over 200 episodes, Anything Ghostās extensive library will keep you terrified all the way through October.
If youāre looking to combat the willies these four shows have no doubt given you, I offer up Werewolf Ambulance. A comedy podcast reviewing a varied offering of horror films, hosts Katie and Allen watch the weekās movie and review it in a self-described ānot-so-academic wayā, either praising the film for its genius or dismantling it for being so terrible. The duo has taken on everything from classics like Rosemaryās Baby and Suspiria to clunkers such as Leprechaun In The Hood and Zombeavers. Iād advise watching the selections before listening to the episodes, as they do contain spoilers, but if youāre looking for some respite to the monsters under the bed and the roaming spirits of the deceased, this might just be the show for you.
