Does it scare you at all to have scrapped your theme, just like that? I ask because I kinda just did that too, with mine, but I'm supposed to present it by june, so I'm kinda freaking out.
It probably should, but for now, all I feel is relief. I feel like a dark, heavy weight has been lifted off of my shoulders and like I can breathe again. I’m sure I’d be having a breakdown if I had to stick to my original deadlines, but now that I have an extra year to finish my degree…Â
I will say this though. I would be freaking out had I scrapped my thesis with the deadline looming, but I’d still know it was for the best. I know several current PhD candidates who scrapped their MA theses two-three months before the deadline because they were hating their projects. They all worked hard, but they were better off for it, and in a similar situation, I know I would be too. You probably are, as well. If you grow to hate your work, it shows. I was performing so much below my own average because I was hating my work, and I was putting my future at risk because of it. My supervisor noticed, and everyone close to me could see that I was not only hating my work but that I was hovering near the edge of a breakdown. Your MA scores are so much more important than any undergraduate work, and it’s key that you at least like your topic, because if you don’t, it’ll show and it’ll affect your health. Better to be stressed and put in extra work than to sludge through something you hate and destroy both your academic record and your mental health in the process.Â
Best of luck to you!
