Feminism and creative content
Iām just about done with feminism being everywhere.Ā
Donāt get me wrong, Iām female, I support indivduality, modern thinking and bla bla bla, but guys.Ā
TV shows, movies, books, fan fictions.Ā
Itās just. A fucking. Gender. Get over it.Ā
You canāt just ripĀ apart every creative content with any strong majority- and/or weak minority-character in it and then complain if stronger minority- and/or weaker majority-characters sometimes feel forced to you.Ā
WELL SURPRISE! Itās because sometimes they are! You areĀ forcing them!
Creative content will evolve in itās structure as our minds will, since creativity in form of plots or characters often comes from our subconcious (you know, when this one character just pops in your head and you know that itās perfect and you love it just the way it is? No way to control that, honey). So it is useless, if not counterproductiveĀ to just push everything through this weird politics-detectorĀ people have got going on right now.Ā
Like thatās what itās about?
Why do you even give a fuck if there are more men on a show? Or if theyāre all white, or black, or genderfluid rainbow-coloured deers? I mean does everything suddenly have to be perfectlyĀ balanced (except if itās more female, fewer whites and everything, because thatās fine too apparently, never heard anyone complain about that), everything has to be exactly the opposite of a clichĆ© and there is no room for normal?
It basically makes you feel bad for creating a trio of male lead characters, just because itās not right against the norm or perfectly balanced, calculator-style. Because then nobody could say anything, everyoneās the same. Again.
How perverse is that?
Itās like weāre all turning into rebellious teenagers. Or hipsters. Or both.
Iāve been reading the wordĀ āfeministicā wayĀ too often in the past months - in places where it was just so damn unimportant or plain desperate.
Itās not about political correctness, people.Ā
Itās about us. About you.
Do you enjoy the show? Do you connect with the characters, do you laugh, do you cry, to you find yourself shaking with tension, are you itching to know what will happen next, is there continuity, is there an actual goal the charactersā actions lead to?
Those are just some of the things that make a story good.
Not gender. Not sexuality. Not race.Ā
Not pleasing the people.Ā
If you don't enjoy a show because of itās male lead roles, thatās up to you. Maybe youāre just too fixed on the charactersā gender to be able to relate to them. Maybe you think itās boring because of the existence of female supporting roles, because in your eyes, theyāre all the same, so you donāt bother to characterize them properly.
But whatever the reasons, some just random preference, some definitely rightful, itās your personal opinion. Much of which is rooted in your personal life, your experience and your expectations.Ā
Itās perfectly fine not to like something because of things like this.Ā
Just...stop pretending it a main criteria for a showās right to exist and be liked by people in this time.Ā
Not everything has to be calculatedly anti-mainstream.Ā
